Mems Design Engineer information

What does a MEMS design engineer do?

A MEMS Design Engineer specializes in designing micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), which are tiny integrated devices that combine mechanical and electrical components. They work on developing sensors, actuators, and other micro-scale devices used in applications like automotive, healthcare, and consumer electronics. Their responsibilities include modeling, simulation, fabrication process development, and testing MEMS devices to ensure performance and reliability. They often use CAD tools, finite element analysis (FEA), and semiconductor manufacturing techniques to create functional designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MEMS design engineer?

To thrive as a Mems Design Engineer, you need a strong background in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), physics, materials science, and electrical or mechanical engineering, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency with CAD tools, finite element analysis (FEA) software, and MEMS fabrication techniques is essential, alongside familiarity with industry standards and cleanroom protocols. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for successful collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable MEMS devices, ensuring manufacturability, and delivering innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by MEMS design engineers and how can they overcome them?

MEMS Design Engineers often face challenges related to miniaturization, device reliability, and integration with other electronics due to the complex and delicate nature of MEMS technology. Overcoming these issues typically involves rigorous simulation, iterative prototyping, and close collaboration with fabrication and testing teams to catch potential design flaws early. Staying up to date with the latest materials and manufacturing techniques can also help engineers address evolving requirements. Additionally, clear communication with cross-disciplinary colleagues ensures smooth transitions from design to production, increasing the likelihood of project success.

Job description

Role summary:

The Staff MEMS Design Engineer will lead the development of MEMS accelerometers from sensor architecture through product release, qualification, and mass production. This role focuses on mechanical modeling and design, device characterization, occasional handsโ€‘on debugging, test development support, and crossโ€‘functional technical leadership. The successful candidate is detailโ€‘oriented, experienced in MEMS design, and comfortable working across teams and geographies.

Key responsibilities
  • Drive MEMS accelerometer development from architecture and initial design through product release, qualification, and mass production in collaboration with crossโ€‘functional teams
  • Develop nextโ€‘generation MEMS accelerometer architectures and specifications using FEA and other design tools (e.g., ANSYS)
  • Perform occasional handsโ€‘on benchโ€‘level testing and debugging of MEMS devices during critical development, characterization, and rootโ€‘cause investigations using spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and related instrumentation
  • Support sensor characterization and test development by collaborating with test engineers to define test methods, limits, and underlying models for test routines
  • Interface with CMOS designers to define and optimize the MEMS device and its interfaceโ€‘electronics requirements
  • Perform systemโ€‘level modeling and simulation of the MEMS device and its interaction with CMOS interface electronics using MATLAB or equivalent tools
  • Prepare invention disclosures and contribute to patent filings
  • Support customer requests, technical reviews, product definition discussions, and rootโ€‘cause investigations as needed
  • Collaborate with crossโ€‘functional teams across the United States, Taiwan, Italy, and other global locations to drive designs to production
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and training as a senior individual contributor
  • Identify and implement improvements to MEMS design, modeling, characterization, and development workflows
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field; or an M.S. degree with relevant industry experience
  • 3+ years of industry experience designing, modeling, characterizing, or debugging MEMS motion sensors
  • Demonstrated experience designing, modeling, characterizing, or debugging electrostatic MEMS devices, such as accelerometers, resonators, gyroscopes, or related devices
  • Strong theoretical understanding of electrostatic actuation, capacitive sensing, and multiโ€‘degreeโ€‘ofโ€‘freedom mechanical modeling
  • Experience with finite element modeling of MEMS using tools such as ANSYS
  • Experience laying out MEMS devices using L-Edit or similar layout tools
  • Handsโ€‘on experience characterizing and debugging MEMS sensors using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and related instrumentation
  • Demonstrated problemโ€‘solving ability, technical leadership, mentoring experience, and a track record of influencing crossโ€‘functional teams and driving technically complex projects to completion
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, written, and verbal communication skills
Preferred qualifications
  • Direct experience designing, modeling, characterizing, or debugging MEMS accelerometers
  • Proficiency in data analysis with Python or equivalent scripting languages
  • Familiarity with electronics and integrated circuits
  • Experience with MEMS fabrication processes and waferโ€‘level and packageโ€‘level considerations
  • Experience with package modeling or packageโ€‘induced effects in MEMS sensors
