Job description
The UW Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer - Principal to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to Dr. Patricia Kuhl, the Research Scientist/Engineer - Principal is responsible for The person in this position advance existing technology and methods at the I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center; these advances will impact the entire field of magnetoencephalography. The person in this position will understand Center research emphases and needs, and will work on unusually difficult scientific problems that require a high degree of expertise, creative insight and technical skill, resulting in advances beyond the current limitations of MEG technology; and will develop novel solutions that address long standing issues in the field concerning source localization, noise cancellation and head modeling, particularly with regard to the new OP MEG technology.
Work takes place on the UW Seattle campus in a fast-paced, busy laboratory setting.
Key Responsibilities
The person in this position will develop - and plan and direct others - in the advancement of existing technology and methods at the I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center; these advances will impact the entire field of magnetoencephalography. (65%)
- Develop mathematical analyses, methods and hardware for next-generation magnetoencephalography (MEG), with a particular emphasis on emerging wearable optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) technology. These methods and hardware will improve the spatial resolution, robustness, and computational foundations of MEG source imaging (i.e. understanding where in the brain signals are generated).
- Develop sophisticated and robust hardware methods to suppress external interference contributions from our OPM-MEG signals.
- Propose novel approaches to optimize fundamental mathematical signal models for the unique geometry of OPM sensor arrays.
- Pioneer the development of 2-MEG research studies which involve two people, both monitored by MEG technology, who are interacting with each other in real time.
Additional work may include developing improvements to data integration across imaging modalities, for example, MEG-MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), MEG-EEG or MEG-fMRI. (10%)
Serve as leader of technical resources at the I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center. Advise colleagues on best practices, develop custom data analysis routines per Principal Investigator needs, keep abreast of methods development happening worldwide, contribute to novel inventions, patents, designs or techniques that are significant in advancing MEG technology. (10%)
May supervise other Research Scientists, Engineers or Technologists who run daily operations of laboratory. (10%)
Writes grants, presents papers, leads symposia and chairs committees of national and international scientific organizations. (5%)
Required Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering
- At least 5 years demonstrated expertise in development of solutions to MEG technological issues as shown through publication record, awards, successful patents and/or received applications experience
- Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.
Preferred Qualifications
- Data analysis expertise to include, but not limited to, a familiarity with time frequency analysis, coherency, non-linear algorithms, statistical parametric mapping, beamforming, and MRI image processing.
- Proficiency in programming to create analysis tools and programs for Investigators (e.g. Matlab, C).
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
Working Conditions
- Work takes place on the UW Seattle campus in a fast-paced, busy laboratory setting.
