Medical Liens Negotiator

We are seeking a detail-oriented Medical Liens Negotiator to manage, analyze, and resolve medical liens arising from personal injury claims. The ideal candidate will negotiate lien reductions with medical providers, coordinate with insurance carriers, Medicare/Medicaid, and workers' compensation payors, and ensure accurate documentation and timely resolution to maximize recovery for clients while minimizing outstanding lien obligations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review medical bills, itemized statements, and lien documentation associated with personal injury claims.
  • Communicate and negotiate with medical providers, hospitals, and their billing departments to obtain lien reductions and favorable settlement terms.
  • Prepare and send demand and settlement correspondence, including verification letters, Medicare conditional payment requests, Medicaid coordination, and workers' compensation notices.
  • Coordinate with insurance companies, claims adjusters, defense counsel, and plaintiff attorneys to resolve lien issues prior to settlement or judgment.
  • Investigate lien validity, priority, and statute of limitations concerns; verify coverage and benefits when applicable.
  • Document all negotiations, offers, and communications in case management systems; maintain accurate files and audit trails for each account.
  • Analyze settlement scenarios to determine payment allocation, ensuring compliance with Medicare/Medicaid rules and statutory liens.
  • Prepare settlement estimates and final payoff statements for use in client settlements and closing documents.
  • Escalate complex or disputed liens to senior staff or legal counsel when necessary and support litigation-related lien tasks.
  • Monitor and track outstanding liens, renewal deadlines, and follow-up actions to ensure timely resolution and reporting.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience negotiating medical liens, provider balances, or working in medical billing for personal injury or related fields; experience with insurance companies and claims handling preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Medicare conditional payments, Medicaid recovery rules, workers' compensation liens, and statutory lien processes.
  • Strong negotiation skills with a proven ability to reach reductions and favorable payment terms with medical providers and facilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience drafting demand letters, settlement correspondence, and administrative notices.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple accounts and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with case management or claims systems, Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and electronic billing portals.
  • Ability to analyze medical billing statements, CPT/ICD codes at a high level, and identify billing discrepancies.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or paralegal/legal assistant certification preferred.
  • Professional demeanor, discretion with confidential client information, and a collaborative team orientation.
