Location BMH Bronson Methodist Hospital Title Lab Courier As the external face of Bronson Lab, a lab courier requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills in their daily interactions with clinical staff, lab clients and customers throughout their delivery routes.

Couriers transport samples and specimens using a fixed schedule that brings them to their stops at approximately the same time each day. Daily documentation and tracking of deliveries, delivery times and transport contents are required. Lab couriers must be cautious and organized when handling specimens, as any disarray in labeling or sorting lab specimens and test results can have dire consequences for medical offices and their patients and lab's clients. Educational and Job Requirements: * High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. * Valid Michigan Driver's License * Safe Driving Record Requirements * Requires courtesy, tact, and excellent customer service orientation. * Employees must demonstrate competencies specific to populations served for clinical or non-clinical dependent upon laboratory location. * Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department * Each individual must complete training documentation on pre-analytical variables prior to working unaccompanied, if assigned. * Must demonstrate a degree of independent judgment and critical thinking, consulting with the department leader(s) when appropriate. * Must be able to move from task to task, maintaining quality and efficiency * Must be reliable and professional with outstanding routing and directional skills.

GPS know-how and an excellent knowledge of daily traffic patterns and alternate routes to each location stop is essential. * Has a passion for delivering critical clinical lab specimens and supplies punctually and work comfortably under tight deadlines to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of medical items. * Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail and maintain a positive attitude * Adhere to Bronson's mission, values, fundamentals, strategies, vision and minimum working requirements (i.e. TB testing, flu shots, etc.). Reflects a positive attitude and abides by Bronson's Standards and Plan for Excellence. * Follows all laboratory established policies and procedures. * Competency assessment, although not required for non-testing personnel, must be satisfactory if assigned by department leader. Role and Responsibilities * Takes directions from the Lab Courier Dispatcher for pickups and deliveries. * Drives company vehicle to client's offices for pickup of specimens per established routes and schedules. * Adjusts route and schedule when dispatched to stat requests. * Checks specimens against requisition for proper patient identification, demographics, insurance information, collection, and storage. * Follow blood bank procedure when delivering blood products during a stat massive transfusion protocol. * Follow all Bronson guidelines when transporting supplies via the tunnel using electric cart * Some routes will require Lab Couriers to walk between points of destination for the purpose of transporting specimens for laboratory testing. * Safeguards and properly handles specimens while in route. * Prepares lab diagnostic reports for distribution in a timely fashion. * Prepares supply orders, and ensure proper delivery of supplies/specimens as directed by department operations. * Daily documentation and tracking of deliveries, delivery times and transport contents to include daily automobile check. * Communicates client's concerns or issues to department leader. * Uses mobile phones for in route communications, GPS for necessary way-finding and computers as necessary for daily job requirements. * Fills in for Lab Courier Dispatcher in their absence. * Assists with other duties in technical departments as needed. * Lab couriers must be cautious in handling specimens and organized, as any disarray in labeling or sorting lab specimens and test results can have dire consequences for medical offices and their patients and lab's clients. * Transports inter-office mail, postal mail, dirty instruments, N95 masks, and other items as directed by lab leaders. * Other duties as assigned by leader(s) Working Conditions * Be part of a team oriented environment that includes problem solving and creative thinking * Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) * Be able to drive in all weather conditions and for prolonged periods of time. * Must follow laboratory safety policies and procedures due to potential for occupational exposure to infectious materials, including but not limited to: blood and other potentially infectious materials. * Work in an environment with some exposure to noxious fumes and unpleasant noises. * Work in an environment with risk of sustaining illness and injury from the use of chemicals and biological materials and organisms. * Working irregular hours, including overtime, holidays, weekends and on-call hours. * Work involving extremely close tolerances and considerable hand/eye coordination for sustained periods of time.
