Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for a group of patients. This role involves leading the nursing team in providing care as directed by attending physicians and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. The RN fosters an environment that promotes patient, family, and staff satisfaction by emphasizing safety, evidence-based practices, and patient- and family-centered care.

Scope of Practice

The Registered Nurse delivers care to individuals and groups requiring specialized knowledge and clinical judgment. This care is guided by the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences. The RN practices within the full legal scope defined by the state Board of Nursing and in accordance with the standards of accrediting bodies.

Key ResponsibilitiesPatient- & Family-Centered Care

• Recognize patients and their designated caregivers as partners in care.
• Incorporate patient values, preferences, and needs into care planning.
• Deliver care with sensitivity to diverse backgrounds in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Provide education and support throughout the care continuum.
• Promote smooth care transitions through effective communication and collaboration.
• Continuously evaluate patient responses and intervene to achieve optimal outcomes.

Evidence-Based Practice

• Integrate current evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to guide care decisions.
• Develop individualized care plans grounded in research and clinical best practices.

Nursing Practice

• Perform patient assessments and formulate nursing diagnoses.
• Implement and evaluate care plans based on individual patient needs.
• Prioritize and address problems using critical thinking and sound clinical judgment.

Safety & Quality Improvement

• Enhance care quality and reduce harm to patients and staff.
• Administer medications and treatments within the scope of licensure.
• Participate in quality improvement projects and support the use of technology for safety.
• Identify and report safety concerns, including near-miss events.
• Apply error prevention and risk-reduction strategies.

Informatics & Technology

• Use technology to support patient care, documentation, and communication.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic health records.
• Respond appropriately to clinical alerts and decision-support tools.
• Protect patient privacy and maintain the integrity of health records.

Communication, Teamwork & Collaboration

• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the care team.
• Coordinate patient care and delegate appropriately.
• Address clinical and safety concerns using the appropriate chain of command.
• Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.

Leadership & Professionalism

• Influence team performance and facilitate goal achievement.
• Stay current on nursing scope of practice and standards.
• Lead initiatives to improve patient outcomes and work environment.
• Provide supervision and guidance to ancillary staff.

Systems-Based Practice

• Participate in system-wide care initiatives and standards.
• Engage in provider rounding, bedside shift reports, and hourly rounding.
• Escalate concerns related to quality, safety, and satisfaction as needed.

Other duties as assignedRequired Qualifications

Education:

• Completion of an accredited nursing program.
• In Michigan, RNs must complete 25 contact hours of continuing education per licensure period:
• 2 hours on pain and symptom management
• 1 hour on implicit bias training

Licensure:

• Active, unrestricted RN license in the practicing state

Certifications:

• Current CPR certification required
• Additional specialty certifications as applicable to role or department

Preferred Qualifications
