A medical group is an organization of healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and specialists, who work together to provide coordinated medical care to patients. These groups can include primary care physicians, specialists, and other providers who share resources and collaborate to improve patient outcomes. Medical groups may operate independently or be affiliated with larger healthcare systems or hospitals. By working as a group, they can offer a broader range of services and streamline administrative processes, making healthcare delivery more efficient for both providers and patients.

Working in a medical group practice often means collaborating with multiple healthcare providers, coordinating patient care, and navigating shared resources. New employees may initially find it challenging to adjust to the fast-paced environment, diverse workflows, and interdisciplinary communication. To adapt effectively, it's important to proactively seek feedback, participate in team meetings, and familiarize yourself with the group's protocols and electronic health record systems. Building strong relationships with colleagues and staying open to learning will help you integrate smoothly and contribute positively to patient outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Medical Group management role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Medical Group management role, you need a solid background in healthcare administration, business operations, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a degree in healthcare management or a related field. Familiarity with practice management software, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and relevant certifications like CMPE or FACHE is common. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills help you effectively coordinate teams and foster a collaborative environment. These skills ensure efficient practice operations, regulatory adherence, and quality patient care within the medical group.

Pomona, CA

Job description

Senior Director, Medical Group Operations

Akido is rebuilding the healthcare experience from the ground up. Through early interventions designed around social determinants of health (SDoH), world-class care focused on chronic disease, and human-centered technology, we believe we can build a healthcare model that allows for all patients to live their fullest lives. We are a fast-growing, impact-focused, Y Combinator company created out of the University of Southern California’s D-Health Lab with the idea that empowering government, healthcare, and nonprofit services with population-based data could help usher in a new era of preventive public health. Today we are building a full stack medical network that leverages our predictive capabilities to provide a frictionless experience for both our patients and care providers.

The Opportunity As the Senior Director, you will hold full P&L responsibility for a 70-provider, multi-specialty group serving patients across 12 clinics in the Pomona Valley region. In close partnership with a Regional Clinical Lead, you’ll drive physician alignment, lead the adoption of cutting-edge AI-powered care delivery technologies, and ensure operational excellence across all managed care functions.

What You’ll Do
  • Serve as the operational lead for the Pomona Valley region, working alongside a Regional Clinical Lead to deliver integrated clinical and administrative performance
  • Lead adoption of the Akido Chart EMR and Scope AI feature set, ensuring physicians and staff can realize its benefits in everyday workflows
  • Drive regional financial reporting and performance accountability, owning KPIs and monthly scorecards
  • Own relationships with contracted health plans and delegated entities, acting as the primary point of contact for day-to-day operations and escalations
  • Ensure provider operations meet health plan specifications and standards, especially as we prepare for risk-based contracting
  • Develop and continuously improve policies, SOPs, and workflows across managed care functions—including UM, QM, claims, and eligibility
  • Manage vendor relationships supporting managed care, holding partners accountable for performance and results
  • Develop a team culture that fosters passion for making a difference in the communities we serve, promotes innovation and teamwork, and builds high performance and accountability
  • Collaborate with operations architects to redesign workflows for efficiency, automation, and scale
  • Help shape and refine the regional manager playbook as the pilot leader of this new organizational model
What You Have
  • 10+ years of experience in medical group operations, ideally in Southern California
  • Proven success in managed care environments, including P&L ownership or deep familiarity with risk-based contracting
  • Strong understanding of delegated operations across UM, QM, claims, and eligibility
  • Experience working with or leading global operations teams supporting care delivery and administrative functions
  • Familiarity with EMR transitions and digital adoption, especially in outpatient or value-based care contexts
  • Strong relationship management skills and the ability to navigate complex payer/provider ecosystems
  • Preferred: experience using or managing operations in EZCAP

Compensation $190,000-$230,000 annually

Salary range: $190,000 USD - $230,000 USD
