Job description

Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (MA) assists providers and nurses with patient care, initiates patient flow, maintains the environmental areas of the clinic and examination rooms and assists with telephoning and filing.
Position Status
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The MA reports to the Team Leader.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist patients to exam rooms
  • Obtains vital signs
  • Obtains, evaluates, and record's patient history as per protocols
  • Admits patients, takes height, weight, blood pressure and other measurements as applicable
  • Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control
  • Assists with examinations, procedures and treatments
  • Assists patients to examination rooms, lab and restrooms
  • Collects and process specimens
  • Complies with established risk management and safety procedures
  • Complies with quality assurance practices
  • Maintains examination/treatment rooms, including inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Maintains medication and immunization records
  • Makes appointments and schedules referrals as directed
  • Makes copies and faxes documents as requested
  • Makes correct entries in patient charts and checks appointment dates
  • Manages the care of patients in collaboration with other health professionals and members of the healthcare team in order to make decisions about treatment and attain health goals
  • Performs CLIA-waived tests
  • Administers meds as under license
  • Performs electrocardiography and respiratory testing
  • Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture and capillary puncture
  • Performs quality assurance on glucometers
  • Practices Standard Precautions, including hand washing and disposal of bio-hazardous materials
  • Prepares and administer oral and parenteral medications
  • Prepares patient for examinations, procedures and treatments; obtains any authorizations for procedure and/or treatment, if required
  • Receives, organizes, prioritizes, stores and maintains transmittable information utilizing electronic technology
  • Recognizes and responds to emergencies
  • Serves as "communication liaison" between the provider and patient
  • Performs other duties of a MA as required
  • Restocks and straightens exam rooms

Education and Experience
  • CPR certified
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) required
  • Training verification as a MA required
  • Successful completion of testing preferred
  • Two (2) years of successful experience in a clinical setting preferred

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to deliver medical services and use equipment.
  • Ability to work in conditions that include exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissues, contagious diseases and/or other potentially hazardous materials
  • Fine motor coordination sufficient to perform manipulative skills
  • Moderate physical exertion including frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching and carrying moderately heavy loads (up to 25 lbs.)
