What is a media operator?

Media Operators are professionals responsible for managing, operating, and maintaining audio-visual equipment and broadcast systems used in television, radio, live events, and online media. Their duties often include setting up equipment, monitoring broadcasts, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring smooth delivery of content. Media Operators may work in studios, control rooms, or on-location, collaborating with other production staff to ensure high-quality media output. They play a key role in the technical side of media production, ensuring that everything runs efficiently and meets industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a media operator?

Media Operators need a solid understanding of audio-visual technology, broadcast standards, and often a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with editing software, broadcast automation systems, and media servers is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure seamless media production, minimize errors, and maintain high-quality broadcasting in fast-paced environments.

What are some common challenges media operators face when managing live broadcasts, and how can they prepare for them?

Media Operators often encounter technical issues such as signal loss, audio disruptions, or unexpected equipment failures during live broadcasts. To effectively handle these challenges, they must maintain strong attention to detail, perform thorough equipment checks before going live, and have contingency plans in place. Collaborating closely with engineers, producers, and on-air talent is crucial to quickly resolve issues and keep the broadcast running smoothly. Staying calm under pressure and being adaptable are key traits that help Media Operators excel in this dynamic environment.

Job description

Job Summary

As the Director of Media, you are the strategic operator—possessing the high‑level vision to steer a multi‑million dollar investment and the technical depth to interrogate the mechanics of a media plan. You don’t just manage spend; you ensure every dollar is an intentional move toward a measurable outcome. By navigating a high‑stakes, multi‑stakeholder environment, you will lead the evolution of our media narrative, ensuring it moves global accounts from awareness to a closed‑won partnership.

Core Responsibilities
  • Strategic Growth & Portfolio Architecture Define the investment philosophy for North America and LATAM, ensuring media spend is a primary driver of pipeline velocity and market share. You will move beyond top‑of‑funnel metrics to architect sophisticated, non‑linear journeys that engage entire Buying Groups within target accounts.

  • Disruptive Omnichannel Innovation Lead the charge in disrupting traditional B2B formats by exploring the connectivity between digital and physical environments. You will architect a mix of high‑impact channels—including CTV, Podcasts, OOH/DOOH, and Creator partnerships—to break through market noise and create a persistent brand presence.

  • Ecosystem Influence & AdTech Advisory Act as a key influencer of the AdTech/MarTech roadmap. Partnering with Operations, you will ensure our stack—including 6Sense, Demandbase, and Google Marketing Platform—is optimized to deliver the targeting precision and data‑rich insights required for modern B2B journeys.

  • Media Operations & Decision Authority Possess a deep understanding of media operations to make informed decisions on agency workflows, budget pacing, and data integrity. You will hold our partners to a pristine standard of execution, ensuring the health and transparency of the media P&L.

  • Narrative Continuity & Brand Stewardship Act as a catalyst for the creative lab, ensuring the Brand Experience is essential and consistent across all global touchpoints. Use performance signals to influence journey‑specific content, ensuring that every creative asset is purpose‑built for the environment in which it lives.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration & Storytelling Navigate a complex matrixed environment with high EQ. You are a master storyteller who can synthesize multi‑stream data into high‑fidelity narratives for Sales, Product, and Executive leadership, providing strategic clarity that secures buy‑in for bold, innovative media moves.

Who You Are (The DNA)
  • The Strategic Operator You have the operator DNA to dive deep into a media plan and the strategic breadth to lead a boardroom discussion. You are hands‑on when the details matter but never lose sight of the overarching business goals.

  • Master Storyteller & High‑EQ Leader You are a natural people person who translates complex media metrics into compelling business stories. You build trust‑based relationships across Digital, Field, Sales, and Product teams.

  • Intellectually Restless You have an innate curiosity and a relentless drive to break performance ceilings. You are never satisfied with “industry standard” and are constantly seeking the next frontier of B2B disruption.

  • The Strategic Globalist You possess a world‑class understanding of the US media landscape and the specific cultural and business nuances of the LATAM market.

Qualifications

What You Bring

  • Experience 15+ years in media strategy, planning, and leadership, with a significant lean into B2B technology.

  • Digital Commerce Acumen Previous experience with eCommerce or high‑velocity digital transaction models is a significant advantage.

  • The Toolkit Mastery of the modern media stack (GMP, LinkedIn, Intent platforms). Deep experience with disruptive channels (Audio, CTV, Social) and bridging digital/physical experiences.

  • Influence & Diplomacy A proven track record of managing the expectations of a multi‑stakeholder organization, from regional Sales leads to C‑suite executives.

  • Business Literacy You understand the P&L as fluently as you speak CPMs and Multi‑Touch Attribution, ensuring media is always a catalyst for organizational success.
