What does a mechanical systems engineer do?

A Mechanical Systems Engineer designs, analyzes, and maintains mechanical systems and components, such as engines, HVAC systems, or manufacturing equipment. They ensure that systems perform efficiently, safely, and reliably by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science. Their work often involves creating technical drawings, conducting simulations, selecting materials, and collaborating with other engineers and stakeholders. Mechanical Systems Engineers play a key role in troubleshooting issues, improving existing designs, and overseeing the installation and testing of mechanical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and relevant certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license are typically essential. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage complex projects. These skills ensure the design, implementation, and maintenance of efficient mechanical systems that meet technical and safety standards.

What are common challenges faced by mechanical systems engineers when working on interdisciplinary projects?

Mechanical Systems Engineers often collaborate with electrical, software, and civil engineering teams on complex projects. One common challenge is ensuring seamless integration between mechanical components and other system elements, which requires strong communication and coordination skills. Additionally, managing conflicting requirements and timelines between disciplines can be demanding, so flexibility and problem-solving abilities are crucial. Embracing cross-functional teamwork and staying adaptable helps Mechanical Systems Engineers navigate these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Mechanical Systems Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Systems EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating and optimizing entire mechanical systems, including components and subsystemsCreating detailed mechanical component and product designs
Work EnvironmentSystems integration, testing, and validation in manufacturing or engineering firmsDesign studios, CAD modeling, and prototype development
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; often certifications in systems engineeringBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; proficiency in CAD software

Mechanical Systems Engineers focus on the overall integration and performance of mechanical systems, while Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on developing specific components and parts. Both roles require a strong engineering background and often overlap in skills, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and application.

Pay Range: $42–$50/hr, depending on experience

Role Overview

BEPC is seeking a motivated, hands-on Electro-Mechanical Systems Engineer to support our client’s development and testing of complex electro-mechanical systems. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working directly with hardware, developing test methods, analyzing sensor data, troubleshooting technical issues, and translating results into clear engineering documentation.

The successful candidate will apply engineering design principles across system development, testing, reliability assessment, and manufacturing support. This role requires strong independent decision-making, technical writing abilities, and experience working with complex electro-mechanical devices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop test methods and comprehensive test plans for complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Design and execute experiments using Design of Experiments (DoE) methodologies.
  • Perform data analysis, including using Python to analyze test and sensor data.
  • Evaluate digital sensor outputs and interpret results to assess system performance.
  • Develop and configure test beds and supporting test equipment.
  • Execute hands-on testing protocols and assess results against design specifications.
  • Participate in design reviews, design concept development, system testing, and reliability testing.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and identify root causes and potential engineering solutions.
  • Evaluate interactions between electrical, mechanical, sensor, and system-level components.
  • Author detailed test protocols, engineering reports, and other technical documentation.
  • Manage the defect lifecycle, including defect collection, documentation, tracking, and summarization for the development partner.
  • Support manufacturing process development and troubleshoot manufacturing-related engineering issues.
  • Make independent engineering decisions while collaborating with cross-functional development teams.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Electrical, Chemical, Biomedical, or Software Engineering preferred.
  • 4+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with complex electro-mechanical systems or devices.
  • Experience with risk management and requirements management.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including experience authoring test protocols, reports, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience developing and executing engineering test methods and test plans.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Experience analyzing test or sensor data.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions.

Highly Desired:

  • Python coding experience for engineering data analysis.
  • Design of Experiments (DoE) experience.
  • Test bed development experience.
  • Experience working in an FDA- or FAA-regulated environment.
  • Medical device industry experience is strongly preferred.
