Position Overview

RTM Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer IV to support the design, analysis, engineering, and delivery of complex mechanical systems for a diverse portfolio of projects in the Baltimore, Maryland area.

This senior-level position is designed for a mechanical engineering professional who can take ownership of technically complex assignments while serving as a senior technical resource to project teams. You will lead mechanical engineering efforts, develop technically sound building-system solutions, coordinate across multiple disciplines, and provide technical guidance and mentorship to developing engineers and project staff.

The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, strong HVAC and mechanical building systems expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to independently manage projects from concept through construction.

Core Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineering & Technical Leadership

  • Lead mechanical engineering design and analysis for complex projects involving HVAC, plumbing, piping, equipment, and related building mechanical systems.
  • Develop engineering calculations, equipment selections, system layouts, specifications, schedules, and construction documents.
  • Evaluate existing mechanical systems and develop recommendations for upgrades, renovations, replacements, and new installations.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource, applying sound engineering judgment to resolve complex design challenges.
  • Perform or oversee load analyses, energy evaluations, equipment sizing, system assessments, and other engineering calculations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance, energy efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle cost.

Project Delivery & Coordination

  • Take ownership of complex mechanical engineering assignments from concept through construction and closeout.
  • Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, structural, electrical, controls, civil, and other disciplines.
  • Review drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, and technical documentation for accuracy, quality, constructability, and compliance.
  • Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with project managers and clients.
  • Participate in site surveys, field investigations, commissioning activities, and construction-phase services as required.
  • Maintain high standards for technical quality, documentation, and project delivery.

Client & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Communicate directly with clients, contractors, vendors, architects, and other project stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
  • Understand client objectives and operational requirements and translate them into practical mechanical engineering solutions.
  • Support multidisciplinary project teams in maintaining project objectives, schedules, and quality expectations.
  • Contribute to proposals, statements of qualifications, technical presentations, and business development activities as appropriate.

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to less-experienced engineers and designers.
  • Serve as a technical leader within project teams and help elevate engineering quality and consistency.
  • Share knowledge, best practices, and technical expertise with developing staff.
  • Support a collaborative environment focused on professional development and high-quality project delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, preferably within consulting engineering, facilities, building systems, or a related environment.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or required based on project and client needs.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC and mechanical building systems, engineering principles, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex engineering assignments.
  • Experience developing and reviewing construction documents, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate work across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Proficiency with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with load calculation, energy modeling, or other mechanical engineering software is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with federal, state, municipal, healthcare, higher education, commercial, industrial, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Experience with both renovation/modernization projects and new construction.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficiency strategies, sustainability requirements, and high-performance building systems.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical teams.
  • Experience supporting projects through construction administration and closeout.
  • Existing relationships with clients, contractors, architects, or other industry partners throughout the Baltimore/Washington, DC region.
  • Experience with commissioning, field investigations, and construction-phase services.
