What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, CAD modeling, and problem-solving, typically supported by coursework in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation tools, along with knowledge of industry standards, is highly valued. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help interns contribute effectively and grow within diverse project teams. These skills are crucial for producing accurate designs, collaborating on solutions, and successfully transitioning from academic to professional engineering environments.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a Mechanical Design Internship?

As a Mechanical Design Intern, you'll typically work on assisting with the creation and modification of CAD models, supporting prototype development, and conducting basic engineering analysis under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns often participate in team meetings, collaborate with manufacturing and testing teams, and help document design changes or test results. This hands-on exposure not only builds technical skills but also provides insight into the collaborative and iterative nature of mechanical design in a professional setting.

What is a Mechanical Design Internship?

A Mechanical Design Internship is a temporary, hands-on work experience where students or recent graduates assist engineers in designing mechanical systems, components, or products. Interns typically use computer-aided design (CAD) software, create technical drawings, and may participate in prototyping and testing. This internship allows individuals to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering projects, develop technical skills, and gain exposure to the professional environment within the mechanical engineering field.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Internship vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design InternshipMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering programBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, professional licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentTemporary, learning-focused, often in corporate or manufacturing settingsFull-time, responsible for project design, development, and implementation
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs in engineering firms, manufacturing companies, or R&D departmentsEstablished roles in similar industries, with ongoing project responsibilities

In summary, a Mechanical Design Internship is a temporary, entry-level position aimed at gaining practical experience, while a Mechanical Design Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems. Internships often serve as a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed engineer or full-time designer.

Job description

Description:

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer with 1โ€“3 years of experience in mechanical design. The ideal candidate will have working familiarity with SolidWorks and a foundational understanding of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal, plastic injection molding, extrusion, and 3D printing. This is a support-oriented role requiring clear communication, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset. The Mechanical Engineer will assist in the design and production of both new and existing products under the guidance of senior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize SolidWorks to assist in the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Produce detailed assembly drawings, formal drawing documentation, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Support the management and maintenance of design data using PDM/3DEXPERIENCE platforms, following established processes.
  • Apply developing knowledge of sheet metal, plastic injection, extrusion, and 3D printing design guidelines to support manufacturability.
  • Assist with hands-on prototyping efforts, working closely with internal teams to build and test designs.
  • Coordinate and interface with internal teams and external vendors to support the delivery of project milestones.
  • Support multiple design projects under senior engineer guidance, maintaining quality and adherence to timelines.
  • Assist with production activities for both new and existing products, contributing to troubleshooting and technical input as needed.
Requirements:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 1โ€“3 years of experience in mechanical design (internship or co-op experience considered).
  • Working familiarity with SolidWorks; exposure to PDM/3DEXPERIENCE or similar data management systems a plus.
  • Foundational understanding of manufacturing processes including sheet metal fabrication, plastic injection molding, extrusion, and 3D printing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to produce formal documentation and technical drawings.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with a willingness to ask questions and collaborate across engineering and product teams.
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks and meet deadlines with support in a fast-paced environment.
  • Some exposure to prototyping, product testing, or production support.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Experience with project management tools and methodologies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
