What does a mechanical design engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed blueprints and models, ensuring that products meet required specifications and standards. Their work often involves problem-solving, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with other engineers and teams to bring a concept from idea to production. Mechanical Design Engineers are found in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and relevant certifications (like FE or PE) is highly valuable. Strong teamwork, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on multidisciplinary projects and present design solutions. These abilities are crucial for developing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet both technical requirements and client needs.

What are some typical challenges mechanical design engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Design Engineers often collaborate closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that mechanical designs align with the requirements and constraints of other disciplines, such as electronics placement or thermal management. Effective communication and regular meetings are crucial to resolve conflicts, address design changes, and keep projects on schedule. Building strong cross-functional relationships helps Mechanical Design Engineers anticipate potential issues early and deliver integrated solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectMechanical Design EngineerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredAssociate degree or technical diploma in drafting or CAD technology
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDrafting departments, engineering firms, manufacturing settings
ResponsibilitiesDesigns, analyzes, and develops mechanical systems and componentsCreates detailed technical drawings and plans based on engineers' designs

The main difference is that Mechanical Design Engineers focus on designing and developing mechanical systems, requiring engineering degrees and licenses, while Mechanical Drafters prepare detailed drawings based on engineers' concepts, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles work closely in the engineering process but serve different functions within the product development cycle.

What is the work of a Mechanical Design Engineer?

A Mechanical Design Engineer develops and creates mechanical systems, components, and products using CAD software and engineering principles. They analyze specifications, perform simulations, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are functional, efficient, and manufacturable.

Job description

Integrion Automation (formally Wauseon Machine) is a leading provider of custom automation solutions specializing in robotic systems, industrial automation, and custom machine design. We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team located in our Wauseon, Ohio facility. This is a full-time, onsite position.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design and development of custom automated manufacturing equipment from concept through installation and validation. This role is responsible for the conceptualization, mechanical design, engineering analysis, fabrication support, assembly, and commissioning of custom machinery, robotic work cells, fixtures, and industrial automation systems that meet customer requirements for performance, quality, safety, and manufacturability.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering professional with strong machine design expertise, a passion for solving complex engineering challenges, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

Design Development: Create conceptual and final designs for robotic automation systems and industrial machine tools, leveraging SolidWorks for 3D modeling and assemblies. Ensure that designs meet customer specifications and internal requirements. Own all mechanical designs, including debug, troubleshooting, and redesign, regardless of initial designer, to ensure project success.

Project Leadership: Direct all Mechanical Engineering disciplines on automation projects and lead a team of Mechanical Engineers on large projects.

Cross Department Collaboration: Work closely with departments such as controls, operations, and safety to gather inputs and deliver effective automation solutions.

Machine Safety Risk Assessments: Lead and drive the development of safety risk assessments for automation systems and machine tools, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Control System Development: Collaborate with Controls Engineers to develop comprehensive Sequence of Events (SOE) and timing charts for automated systems and machinery.

Concept and Design Reviews: Lead internal reviews of design concepts and final designs with internal teams and end customers to ensure project alignment and resolve technical issues.

Documentation and Manufacturing Support: Generate and manage all necessary project documentation (e.g., prints, bills of materials) and release them to manufacturing and purchasing departments. Support the construction, assembly, and testing phases of projects. Maintain task status on mechanical engineering checklists, including APP process and design checklists, to ensure project alignment."

Project Execution: Monitor project progress, ensuring that designs are executed within scope, on time, and within budget. Provide technical support across all stages of project development, from design to delivery. Attend weekly project status meetings to collaborate with the project team and ensure alignment.

Automation Process Improvement: Identify, prioritize, and implement automation solutions to optimize existing processes and increase operational efficiency in machine tools and robotic work cells.

Customer Interaction and Technical Support: Act as a key point of contact for customers, providing technical support, resolving issues, and offering expert guidance on automation solutions.

Collaboration with Cross-functional Teams: Work alongside mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to support the overall design, testing, and implementation of automation systems. Participate in regular meetings with support staff and team members to address project issues and updates

FMEA and Safety Assessments: Conduct and contribute to Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other safety assessments to ensure the reliability and safety of automation systems.

Continuous Improvement: Stay engaged in the latest trends in robotic automation and industrial machine tools to drive innovation and improvements in design and performance.

Qualifications:

Experience: 5+ years of experience designing and developing industrial machine tools, automation systems, and robotic work cells. Strong experience with the integration of robotic systems into manufacturing processes is required.

Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks 3D parametric modeling and assemblies, with experience using SolidWorks PDM Professional for data management.

Education: Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
