HII Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams provide expert solutions on US Naval Vessel alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Mechanic Assistant candidate will support PM, working closely with our skilled trades teams, on active class surface ships using various processes, mechanical techniques and related tools to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment, assisting with alterations and installations for fleet modernization on various contracts. Weekend and/or overtime hours may be required depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set.
Selected candidates will be required to commute to and maintain access to shipyards and military bases located around the Hampton Roads area depending on contract obligations. Selected candidates may be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.
Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Gain valuable trades and life experience as you learn and focus your skills through the direction of senior technical tradespersons on a variety of tasks.
  • Perform routine work technical trades duties, under direction, and in accordance with blueprints and technical manuals, to include support of technical repair, installation, maintenance and modification of equipment and related structures and systems at customer and/or field locations.
  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled specific or general duties, such as using, supplying or holding materials and tools; cleaning working area, machines, equipment and diverse tasks as directed.
  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide array of systems and equipment.
  • Apply job skills and company policies to complete a wide range of tasks that vary based on job, contract, customer requirements, specifications, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 1 year of related experience.
  • Must have experience safely using hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment
  • Must have experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to travel between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasking.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.

Preferred Requirements
  • Prior Shipboard experience is preferred.
  • Previous work related to technical trades is preferred.
  • Candidates with related technical training, degrees, and/or certifications are highly preferred.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
