What is the difference between Matrix Manager vs Project Manager?

AspectMatrix ManagerProject Manager
CredentialsTypically requires management or leadership experience, often with certifications like PMP or similarUsually requires project management certifications like PMP or PRINCE2
Work EnvironmentWorks across multiple departments, managing resources and priorities in a matrix structureFocuses on planning, executing, and closing specific projects within defined scope and timeline
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in large organizations with complex structures, such as IT, manufacturing, and consultingWidely used across industries for project execution in IT, construction, healthcare, and more

The main difference is that a Matrix Manager oversees multiple departments and manages resources across projects, while a Project Manager focuses on leading specific projects from start to finish. Both roles require strong leadership and organizational skills, but their scope and responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a matrix manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Matrix Manager, you need strong project management abilities, cross-functional leadership experience, and ideally a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Asana) and experience navigating organizational structures are often required. Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills set successful Matrix Managers apart. These skills are crucial for aligning diverse teams, managing competing priorities, and ensuring project goals are met in complex organizational environments.

How does a matrix manager effectively balance priorities and resolve conflicts between multiple reporting lines?

Matrix Managers often oversee teams where employees report to more than one supervisor, which can sometimes lead to competing priorities. To manage this, Matrix Managers must excel at communication and negotiation, ensuring that expectations from different departments are aligned and transparent. They facilitate regular check-ins and joint meetings to address potential conflicts early, and they work to build consensus among stakeholders. By fostering a collaborative environment and setting clear objectives, Matrix Managers help their teams navigate complex reporting structures and maintain productivity.

What is a matrix manager?

A Matrix Manager is a professional who operates within a matrix management structure, where employees have more than one reporting line, often to both a functional manager and a project or product manager. The Matrix Manager typically coordinates resources, resolves conflicts, and ensures effective communication between different teams or departments. This role requires strong collaboration and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to manage across organizational boundaries. Matrix Managers are common in organizations that work on multiple projects simultaneously or have a complex, cross-functional structure.

Visual Matrix is building the hospitality technology platform of choice. We help hotels maximize revenue, improve operations, and deliver exceptional guest experiences through innovative cloud-based technology. Through our MOP solution, we are also helping lead the hospitality industry's efforts to improve guest safety through anti-trafficking technology.

Backed by Alpine Software Group (ASG), Visual Matrix is entering its next phase of growth with a renewed focus on innovation, operational excellence, and scalable growth. Our culture is collaborative, customer-centric, entrepreneurial, and built on a builder mindset. We move quickly, solve problems together, and empower our people to make an impact.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Visual Matrix is seeking a strategic, hands-on Vice President of Finance to serve as the company's senior finance executive and trusted advisor to the CEO.

This role is ideal for an experienced SaaS finance leader who enjoys both strategy and execution. You will own the entire finance function-including accounting, FP&A, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and financial operations-while helping shape the company's long-term strategy and preparing the business for its next stage of growth.

As a member of the executive leadership team, you will help build the financial infrastructure necessary to support a modern, data-driven SaaS organization. You will develop scalable processes, improve forecasting accuracy, strengthen financial controls, automate manual workflows, and provide clear financial insights that enable better business decisions.

Initially, this role will assess the existing finance organization, determine the appropriate balance between internal resources and external partners, and build the finance function required to support a growing private equity-backed software company. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

You're Excited About This Opportunity Because You Will:

  • Serve as the company's sole finance leader and strategic partner to the CEO, owning both strategic FP&A and the full finance and accounting function.
  • Assess, build, and scale a modern finance organization, determining the right mix of internal talent, external partners, systems, and processes to support the company's next stage of growth.
  • Develop driver-based forecasting models, SaaS KPIs, and executive reporting that improve planning, forecasting accuracy, and business decision-making.
  • Deliver timely, accurate financial reporting and executive- and Board-ready materials that support informed decision-making.
  • Improve financial controls, reporting processes, and finance systems by leveraging automation and AI-enabled workflows to increase efficiency and scalability.
  • Partner with department leaders, the Board, auditors, tax advisors, and private equity stakeholders to support strategic planning, capital allocation, and future transaction readiness.
  • Lead the continued modernization of the finance function, creating scalable processes and infrastructure that enable long-term operational excellence.

We're Excited About You Because:

  • You have significant finance leadership experience within B2B SaaS or technology businesses.
  • You possess deep expertise across accounting, FP&A, SaaS metrics, forecasting, and financial modeling, and have successfully partnered with executive teams, Boards of Directors, and private equity investors.
  • You have built or transformed finance organizations, improving financial reporting, systems, controls, and operational processes in growing businesses.
  • You bring both strategic leadership and a hands-on mindset, and are energized by building a high-performing finance function from the ground up.
  • You possess outstanding leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills and thrive in fast-paced, high-accountability environments.
  • You use modern AI tools responsibly to improve productivity, automate routine work, analyze information, and support better business decisions while exercising sound judgment.
  • You possess a proactive, solution-oriented mindset and consistently demonstrate an "I'll figure it out" approach.

Base Salary Range

The target salary range for this position is ($210,000 - $235,000), and is part of a competitive total rewards package including an annual bonus, employer-paid benefits, L&D stipend and incentive pay for eligible roles. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We review all employee pay and compensation programs annually at minimum to ensure competitive and fair pay.

Other Information

Location: New York City preferred. Remote within the United States will also be considered, with regular travel for executive leadership meetings, strategic planning sessions, Board meetings, and company events.

A Secure Candidate Experience: Visual Matrix is committed to providing a secure and transparent candidate experience. We will never request sensitive personal or financial information (such as Social Security numbers or banking details) during the interview process. All official communication will come from a verified company email address (@visualmatrix.com OR @alpinesg.com).
