What is a Matlab software engineer?

Matlab Software Engineers are professionals who specialize in developing, testing, and maintaining software applications using MATLAB, a high-level programming language and environment designed for numerical computing, data analysis, and visualization. They often work on projects involving algorithm development, simulation, modeling, and data processing, commonly in industries such as engineering, finance, and research. Matlab Software Engineers collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other developers to create efficient solutions for complex problems and may also be responsible for integrating MATLAB code with other programming languages and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab software engineer?

To thrive as a Matlab Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills in MATLAB, a solid understanding of algorithms, and a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems, Simulink, and experience with debugging and testing tools are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating technical requirements. These competencies ensure efficient development of robust mathematical models and solutions for complex engineering challenges.

What are the typical collaboration opportunities for a Matlab software engineer within a multidisciplinary team?

As a Matlab Software Engineer, you’ll frequently collaborate with engineers, scientists, and data analysts to develop and optimize algorithms, create simulation models, and interpret results. This role often involves participating in cross-functional meetings to align software solutions with project requirements, offering technical support to non-software team members, and integrating Matlab code with other programming environments or hardware systems. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as you'll need to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for colleagues with varying levels of programming expertise.

What is the difference between Matlab Software Engineer vs Data Analyst?

Job Description

Since its inception in 1985, the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services. NIAR is looking for a talented CFD Engineer to join our growing, innovative computational aerodynamic team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer to support various diverse customer program efforts.

Essential Functions
  • Perform computational fluid dynamics simulations for aerospace vehicles operating across multiple speed regimes, including but not limited to:
    • Low‑speed commercial aircraft.
    • Transonic and supersonic flight.
    • Hypersonic.
  • Conduct steady and time‑accurate Reynolds‑Averaged Navier‑Stokes (RANS) simulations to predict aerodynamic and aero‑thermodynamic performance, forces, moments, heat loads, and flow characteristics.
  • Generate high‑quality unstructured grids for complex vehicle geometries and perform either manual or automated grid adaptation.
  • Analyze and interpret CFD results to provide engineering insights for vehicle design, performance optimization, and mission planning.
  • Validate simulation results against other computational approaches, experimental data, and flight test measurements.
  • Document analysis methodologies, simulation parameters, and results in technical reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including aerodynamicists, thermodynamicists, aero‑elasticians, flight mechanics, design, stress, and loads engineers.
  • Support the development and implementation of best practices for CFD simulation workflows.
  • Contribute to code verification and validation activities to ensure simulation accuracy and reliability.
Qualifications / Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field; or 5+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field.
  • Experience with steady and time‑accurate RANS simulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with industry‑standard unstructured‑grid CFD software packages (Kestrel, FUN3D, STAR‑CCM+, ANSYS Fluent, or equivalent).
  • Strong background in fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, and numerical methods.
  • Experience with grid generation tools (unstructured and hybrid meshes).
