Materials & Processes: NDT Engineering Specialist III in  GAC Savannah


Unique Skills:

Materials and Processes Engineering Department

Materials and Processes Engineering Department is seeking a highly skilled Non-Destructive Testing Engineer to join our expanding team.  The successful candidate will work closely with M&P Engineers focusing on developing new NDI techniques, aligning M&P Engineering Specifications with best practices and clearly defining inspection requirements. 

The M&P NDT Engineering Specialist III will focus on developing inspection procedures, interpreting complex data, and support the integration of advanced NDT technologies into our manufacturing.  You will bridge the gap between material science and structural integrity.  Serving as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) helping to qualify new manufacturing methods (e.g., Additive Manufacturing, advanced composites) and leading RCCAs for material anomalies.

Scope of work as Part of the M&P

NDT Procedures, Standards, and Requirements

  • Write, review, and maintain NDT inspection procedures and techniques in accordance with industry standards such as NAS 410.
  • Write and approve site-specific NDT procedures for metallic components (using traditional methods (MT/PT/UT/ET).
  • Review and approve supplier-generated NDT procedures, ensuring their composite inspection techniques can detect critical flaws (e.g., porosity, kissing bonds).

NDT Systems, Equipment, and Technology

  • Design and optimize NDT systems and automated inspection solutions (e.g., ultrasonic C-scans or phased array).
  • Lead and support equipment qualifications e.g. C-Scan across the enterprise.

Quality Assurance, Audits, and Compliance

  • Assist Operations and Supplier Quality with conducting internal and supplier audits, respectively. (Tier 1 Suppliers).
  • Work closely with the Quality organization to supplement training of Level I and II technicians, providing technical guidance on difficult-to-interpret results.

Engineering & Design Support

  • Support Design reviews for reference standards.
  • Define NDT requirements during the engineering design phase to ensure product supportability and affordability.

Manufacturing & Production Support

  • Assist the Composite Fabrication Shop with the development of strategic business plans supporting Production efficiency.
  • Support M&P MRB team with discrepancies.

Failure Analysis & Investigation

  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for material or mechanical failures identified through testing.

Soft Skills

  • Attention to Detail: Ability to detect subtle defects that could compromise safety.
  • Communication: Clearly explain technical findings to cross-functional teams, including production, Supply Chain, Supplier Quality, and Peer Engineering Groups.
  • Problem-Solving: A methodical approach to troubleshooting equipment malfunctions or ambiguous data.


 

Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in engineering, science or technical curriculum required or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. 8 years experience in NDT and quality systems related to working with composites and metals in manufacturing, repair and inspection of aircraft, space systems, motorsports, marine or armament. Position Purpose: Leads successful completion of major NDT/engineering programs or conceives research in areas of considerable scope and complexity supporting the development and production of Gulfstream products and services including advanced composites and metals processes specifically with regard to production testing criteria, equipment, methodology and specification development for production acceptance testing. Capable of performing Responsible Level 3 NDT duties.
Job Description
Principle Duties and Responsibilities: Essential Functions:
  1. Establish standards for and/or develop NDT procedures to ensure robust process control including the Gulfstream Shop Practice Manual or Service Manuals as assigned .
  2. Support root cause and corrective action of NDT related MRB to eliminate repetitive rework and continuously improve existing techniques balancing technical product, cost, and schedule .
  3. Team support of cross-functional product teams (PDT) .
  4. Identify appropriate methods/techniques for NDT inspection of pre-cured/co-cured or manufactured composite and metals components/articles .
  5. Measure and document the capabilities of production inspection methods relative to flaw size and type to support development of robust design incorporating NDT inspection capabilities .
  6. Interpret Engineering drawings/requirements and develop recommendations for management and engineering staff to determine quality standards for nondestructive testing .
  7. Supports and assess NDT evaluation technologies in support of new and existing programs and improve manufacturing process inspection using NDT methods .
  8. Maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of composites and/or related manufacturing technologies in order to recommend innovations to improve quality and effectiveness of company products, equipment and services .
  9. Provide certification and training services for Gulfstream as assigned .
Additional Functions:
  1. Maintains a current knowledge of developments in the field of specialty and/or other related aircraft fields in order to recommend innovations to improve quality and effectiveness of company product .
Perform other duties as assigned. Other Requirements:
  1. Must provide formal NDT training and certification records.
  2. 2 ASNT Level 3 certifications required.
  3. Capable of operating data analysis and computer software for NDT testing.
  4. Advanced composite experience (production and applications) preferred.
  5. Experience with FAA or equivalent production approval inspection methods and approval preferred.
  6. Experience with interpreting codes and specifications, writing/reviewing NDE procedures, techniques & NDE engineering process specifications preferred.
This job requires one to be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
