How much do material design jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for material design in the United States is $20.95, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $21.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Material Design specialist typically collaborate with developers and product teams during a project?

A Material Design specialist works closely with developers and product teams to ensure that design concepts are both visually appealing and technically feasible. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to discuss user interface elements, sharing design guidelines, and providing assets or prototypes. The specialist also reviews implementation to maintain consistency with Material Design principles and may offer feedback or adjustments as development progresses. This close teamwork helps bridge the gap between design vision and practical application, resulting in cohesive and user-friendly products.

What is Material Design?

Material Design is a design language developed by Google that aims to create a consistent and intuitive user experience across platforms and devices. It uses visual cues inspired by physical materials like paper and ink, emphasizing depth, motion, and responsive interactions. Material Design provides guidelines for layout, color schemes, typography, and component behavior to help designers and developers create visually appealing and user-friendly applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Material Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Material Designer, you need expertise in materials science, product design, and engineering principles, generally supported by a degree in materials science, engineering, or industrial design. Familiarity with CAD software, materials testing equipment, and simulation tools is typically required, along with knowledge of industry standards and certifications. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong collaboration skills help Material Designers develop innovative solutions and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These abilities are essential for creating functional, cost-effective, and sustainable materials that meet product and industry needs.

In this role, you will drive the development of next-generation CMP pad technologies by creatingdifferentiated material concepts andbroadeningthe boundaries of current design approaches. You will work cross-functionally withengineering, manufacturing, quality, and external partners totranslate innovative designs intorobust, scalable, and cost-effective solutions that create long-term competitiveadvantage.

WhatYou'llDo

Lead material engineering and platform innovation

  • Lead the design and engineering of next-generation polymer material systems for advanced CMP applications, defining formulation strategies and material design space (composition, architecture, and process interactions) to achieve targeted performance and manufacturability.

  • Apply deepexpertisein polymer science and structure-property-process relationships to develop differentiated material concepts and expand current design boundaries.

  • Translate material designs into scalable, manufacturable, and high-performance products by integrating formulation, processing, and engineering principles.

  • Utilize advanced characterization, modeling, and experimental approaches to guide design decisions and accelerate technology development.

  • Translate customer and business needs into robust technical solutions, balancing performance, manufacturability, reliability, cost, and sensitivity to material and process variation.

Solve complex multidisciplinary challenges

  • Lead investigations into material, process, and product performance challenges across development and manufacturing environments.

  • Apply first-principlesthinking, Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and data-driven methodologies to accelerate learning andoptimizetechnical solutions.

  • Collaborate across R&D, manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to resolve critical technical issues and enable successful commercialization.

Provide technical leadership

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship across multiple development programs and cross-functional initiatives.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, suppliers, customers, and external partners to advance strategic technologyobjectives.
