What is marketing automation?

Marketing automation refers to the use of software platforms and technologies to automate repetitive marketing tasks and workflows, such as email campaigns, social media posting, and lead nurturing. It helps businesses streamline their marketing processes, personalize communications, and improve efficiency by targeting customers with the right message at the right time. Marketing automation tools also provide valuable analytics and insights to optimize marketing strategies and measure campaign performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in marketing automation, and why are they important?

To excel in Marketing Automation, you need a solid understanding of digital marketing strategies, data analysis, and campaign management, often supported by a degree in marketing or related fields. Familiarity with automation platforms such as HubSpot, Marketo, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and certifications in these tools are highly valuable. Strong soft skills include attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication for cross-functional collaboration. These abilities are crucial for optimizing marketing processes, enhancing customer engagement, and driving measurable business growth.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in marketing automation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Marketing Automation often encounter challenges such as integrating new tools with existing systems, managing large volumes of customer data, and ensuring accurate campaign tracking. To address these issues, it's important to collaborate closely with IT and data teams, stay updated on platform best practices, and continuously test and optimize automation workflows. Regular training and open communication within the marketing team can also help in efficiently resolving technical or process-related hurdles.

We're looking for a hands-on data/software engineer to build the instrumentation and event pipelines that feed campaign and journey triggers - especially where the data doesn't exist yet. You'll work directly with CRM/marketing automation engineering and campaign operations teams to make audience and event data available, reliable, and easy to use.

  • Batch and streaming ETL/ELT pipelines connecting campaign, CRM, and customer data across multiple sources
  • REST API integrations between internal data systems and CRM/marketing automation platforms
  • Data quality checks and monitoring to keep campaign-critical pipelines reliable at scale

What you'll bring

  • 7+ years building data tools/pipelines in Python, Scala, or similar languages
  • 7+ years working in SQL against enterprise data warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, or similar)
  • 5+ years building ETL/ELT pipelines (batch or streaming) from files, databases, and APIs
  • 5+ years working with cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and DevOps practices
  • Comfort integrating systems via REST APIs
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field

How you'll work

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills; comfortable following complex, multi-step instructions and resolving conflicting priorities
  • Able to juggle multiple concurrent projects without losing track of details
  • Quick to pick up new technical concepts and adapt to new tools and technologies
  • Familiar with infrastructure tooling and able to work within established engineering standards and processes
  • Comfortable mentoring or training teammates on systems you own
  • Clear, concise communicator - able to explain technical work to both engineering and business stakeholders
  • Comfortable working under pressure and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with CRM/marketing automation SaaS platforms (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, Statsig, Azure Data Factory, Snowflake)
  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools
