What are some common challenges a Manufacturing Engineer faces in optimizing production processes?

Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing efficiency with product quality, minimizing production costs while maintaining safety standards, and implementing new technologies without disrupting existing workflows. They may also need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as quality assurance and maintenance, to resolve issues quickly. Staying up-to-date with industry advancements and continuous improvement methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma is essential to overcoming these challenges and driving process enhancements.

What are Manufacturing Engineers?

Manufacturing Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and improve manufacturing processes in factories and production plants. They focus on increasing efficiency, reducing waste, and ensuring that products are made safely and cost-effectively. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, quality control teams, and production staff to optimize workflows and integrate new technologies into manufacturing systems.

What Is a Manufacturing Engineer?

A manufacturing engineer is a specialized engineer who improves product manufacturing processes. As a manufacturing engineer, your primary duties are to design and develop production systems and improve the tools and systems within the manufacturing process. You will use computer software such as CAD to create, modify, and test the products and manufacturing processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and quality control, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications, and experience with automation systems are commonly required. The Manufacturing Engineer will work closely with Production, Quality, Tooling, and Engineering to ensure safe, efficient, and capable assembly and manufacturing processes.
This position is highly hands-on and floor-focused, requiring direct involvement in assembly processes, equipment build/modification, and launch support. It is not a desk-only engineering role.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support quotation development for post-mold tooling, assembly equipment, fixtures, gauges, and manufacturability reviews
  • Recommend, design, and complete the purchase or build of secondary tooling, fixtures, and assembly equipment
  • Build, modify, and troubleshoot equipment and fixtures on the manufacturing floor
  • Ensure production readiness, including capability runs and launch support activities
  • Develop and support assembly automation, including robotic utilization and integration
  • Coordinate and support pre-production builds and product launch events
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional meetings related to product development and manufacturing concerns
  • Develop and maintain process flows, PFMEAs, control plans, and RPN reduction activities
  • Create and maintain standard work and work instructions, incorporating supervisor and operator input
  • Manage manufacturing programs from launch through steady-state production
  • Track equipment status and resolve open issues related to tooling and assembly equipment
  • Verify processes align with approved flow charts and process layouts
  • Develop, complete, and verify preventative maintenance instructions for assembly equipment
  • Lead launch review meetings and support packaging development, testing, and approval
  • Investigate engineering change feasibility and support implementation
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure quality, on-time product delivery
  • Follow ISO 14001 and TS 16949 requirements
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline
  • At least 2 years of experience in injection molding
  • Hands-on mechanical and assembly experience strongly preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish and English (written and spoken) preferred
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints, equipment manuals, and technical documentation
  • Experience developing manufacturing procedures, work instructions, and technical documentation
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and root-cause analysis skills
  • Leadership mindset with the ability to drive projects and resolve issues
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present in meetings and cross-functional settings
  • Proficiency with Windows-based systems
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, GD&T, and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with 2D and 3D CAD preferred (not required)
  • Excellent time management, organization, and teamwork skills
Work Environment & Expectations:
  • Manufacturing-floor-focused role with significant hands-on involvement in assembly and equipment
  • Standing for extended periods in areas that may be hot, noisy, and dusty.
  • Commitment to safety, ergonomics, and environmental standards
Why Work at MMI?
  • A rich Benefits Package including Medical, Dental, Vision, Long and Short-Term Disability (Company Paid), a robust Wellness Program, tuition reimbursement, and a 401(k) Retirement Plan with matching.
  • Vacation and Sick Time
  • Up to Ten (10) paid holidays (including one diversity holiday)
