Job description

The Medical Billing Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the medical billing function, ensuring claims are submitted accurately and timely, payments are posted correctly, denials are resolved, and accounts receivable is effectively managed. This position supervises billing staff, monitors productivity and accuracy, and works closely with clinical, administrative, insurance, and finance teams to maximize reimbursement and maintain compliance.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate medical billing and collections staff.
  • Oversee the complete billing cycle from charge entry and claim submission through payment posting, denials, appeals, and collections.
  • Monitor claims for accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.
  • Review accounts receivable aging and develop strategies to reduce outstanding balances.
  • Track and resolve insurance denials, rejected claims, underpayments, and billing discrepancies.
  • Ensure timely follow-up on unpaid and outstanding claims.
  • Monitor staff productivity, quality, and key billing performance metrics.
  • Research and resolve complex billing and reimbursement issues.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, payer requirements, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and applicable healthcare billing standards.
  • Maintain and update billing procedures and internal controls.
  • Coordinate with insurance companies and third-party payers regarding claims and reimbursement issues.
  • Assist with month-end reporting, reconciliation, and billing-related financial analysis.
  • Identify billing trends and recommend process improvements to increase collections and reduce errors.
  • Work with clinical and front-office teams to resolve registration, coding, authorization, and documentation issues affecting reimbursement.
  • Prepare management reports regarding collections, denial rates, AR aging, claim volume, and billing performance.
  • Stay current on payer policies, reimbursement changes, and healthcare billing regulations.
  • Handle escalated patient billing questions and complex account issues.

Qualifications
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, accounting, or a related field preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of medical billing experience, with supervisory or team-lead experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the healthcare revenue cycle and insurance billing processes.
  • Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, and managed-care payers.
  • Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, and medical billing terminology.
  • Strong understanding of claims processing, denials management, payment posting, and accounts receivable.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR), practice management, and/or billing software.
  • Strong Excel and reporting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict billing deadlines.
