Job description

Crescent Academy is seeking a flexible, supportive, friendly Reading Specialist for grades K-8th!

Crescent Academy is a school district that serves over 700 students in grade level PreK-9th.

Job Summary:

The Reading Specialist is a highly qualified educator responsible for supporting literacy instruction across grades K-8. This role focuses on improving student reading outcomes by providing targeted instruction, collaborating with classroom teachers, analyzing student reading data, and supporting intervention and enrichment efforts. The Reading Specialist plays a critical role in implementing a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for literacy and ensures that all students become proficient readers.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Support & Intervention

  • Provide small group and/or one-on-one reading interventions for students who are below grade level.

  • Use evidence-based reading strategies to support student learning in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

  • Support English Language Learners and students with IEPs in developing reading skills in coordination with specialized staff.

  • Assist with District Wide Testing such as NWEA, WIDA and M-Step

Data Analysis & Progress Monitoring

  • Administer and interpret universal screeners, diagnostic assessments (e.g., DRA, DIBELS, NWEA MAP, F&P, IXLetc.), and progress monitoring tools.

  • Use data to identify students for interventions and adjust instruction based on ongoing assessment.

  • Collaborate with the RTI/MTSS team to monitor reading growth and track student progress toward goals.

Teacher Collaboration & Coaching

  • Partner with classroom teachers to plan and implement high-quality literacy instruction aligned to state standards and the school's curriculum.

  • Model effective reading strategies and co-teach lessons to demonstrate best practices.

  • Provide professional development and coaching to enhance teachers' understanding of literacy instruction and assessment.

Family & Community Engagement

  • Facilitate literacy workshops or family engagement events to promote a culture of reading within the school community.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field

  • Valid teaching certification in Elementary Education or Reading (State of Michigan certification preferred)

  • Minimum of 3 years successful classroom teaching experience

  • Strong knowledge of the Science of Reading, foundational literacy skills, and reading intervention strategies

  • Experience with assessment tools and data-driven instruction

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Reading, Literacy, or related field

  • Reading Specialist endorsement or certification

  • Training in research-based intervention programs (e.g., Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Leveled Literacy Intervention)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire students of varying reading levels

  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills

  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team

  • Commitment to educational equity and a belief in the potential of every student

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a school environment

  • May involve lifting materials, facilitating small groups, and standing for extended periods

  • Requires regular meetings and collaboration with staff and parents
