Job description

Position Overview

The Medical Director (MD) is responsible for providing strong leadership for the hospital, managing and mentoring associate veterinarians, and ensuring regulatory compliance related to the practice of veterinary medicine. The MD also maintains an environment of teamwork that delivers the highest quality veterinary medicine. In partnership with the hospital leadership team, the MD shares responsibility for the financial health of the hospital, directing staff and overall management of practice operations. The MD also serves as a staff veterinarian in addition to administrative and leadership duties. Effective MDs demonstrate strong work and professional ethics, a positive attitude, and uphold a high standard of patient care.

Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital offers all services under one roof: surgery, dental care, internal medicine, and boarding. The hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical services for pets in Turlock, CA and surrounding areas. Established in 1993, the hospital has been offering a gold standard of care to clients and patients, emphasizing professionalism and compassion.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain a high quality of progressive veterinary care
    • Oversee and give directives regarding medical standards and quality of care
    • Set policies as they pertain to the practice of medicine
    • Work toward integrating various services as one team
    • Recommend additions to the hospital inventory in conjunction with appropriate leadership team members
    • Budget for new equipment and provide reasonable cost estimates and return on investment
    • Provide clinical care by seeing patients
    • Ensure positive communication with clients and among doctors, including proper transfer of patient care responsibilities
    • Review patient records for completeness and accuracy and use them to promote medical excellence
    • Appropriately manage controlled drugs
    • Review and approve requests for alternatives to additional drugs and medical supplies
    • Conduct regular doctor meetings
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager
Administration Duties
  • Handle patient care problems, client complaints, and referral partner issues
  • Manage veterinary, client, and board complaints and recommend resolutions
  • Schedule staff at the hospital to meet practice needs
  • Develop medical policies
  • Assist in ensuring practice compliance with the State Veterinary Medical Practice Act, OSHA, and AAHA standards
Leading by Example
  • Hold licensure in good standing to practice and maintain all required licenses with timely renewals
  • Monitor DVM performance and production, providing coaching when appropriate
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for all staff veterinarians
Development of the Practice
  • Lead candidate interviews of potential DVMs
  • Identify new service opportunities that do not currently exist in the hospital
  • Hold ownership for the revenue and success of the practice by monitoring key performance indicators and working with the Hospital Manager to make adjustments to achieve positive results
  • Help identify and plan for upcoming challenges in maintaining hospital operations and possible temporary solutions (locum)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager
Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Doctor in Veterinary Medicine Degree
  • 3+ years of clinical experience
  • Prior experience in leadership or management preferred
