Job description

TUTOR - READING CENTER (PART-TIME)
TRUMAN COLLEGE
Truman College is seeking a part-time writing and reading Tutor to provide students with tutoring and instructional support in academic, technical, or career courses with respect to critical thinking and reading comprehension, text analysis, and information retention.
The Writing and Reading Center at Truman is a study space designed to help students thrive academically. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in reading and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; and provide on-line tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides academic assistance to assigned tutees, either in a group or individually.
  • Establishes liaison with the instructor and works under the instructor's direction to assist the student.
  • Attends periodic training sessions given by staff members to increase competency in working with students.
  • Maintains records on each student who is being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
  • Schedules tutoring appointments.
  • Provides evaluations and other reports as required by staff.
  • Helps students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying and helps students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
  • Assists students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
  • Helps students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with the assigned students.
  • Assists in designing and implementing class cooperative projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field of study and subject area related to Reading, Writing, and ESL, OR similar technical certifications and training.
• Previous experience with embedded tutoring in credit classrooms, or experience collaborating with faculty to provide instructional classroom support preferred.
• Must have availability in the mornings and/or late afternoons and availability on Fridays and Saturdays.
• Experience working with English Language Learners and/or Developmental Education students preferred.
• Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
• Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the post-secondary instructional level is strongly preferred.
• Experience working with and for minority student populations which may include ethnic, cultural, and linguistic minorities preferred.
• Experience working with Developmental Education and neurodiverse students preferred.
• Reading training or certification preferred.
• Previous experience with embedded tutoring or other forms of supplemental instruction preferred.
• Knowledgeable of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $17.48- $24.59 per hour
Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
