Position Description
The Design Engineering Manager for the Modine Heating business leads a team of product design engineers to develop and validate high-quality physical and thermal solutions aligned with the organization's objectives. This role provides both hands-on people leadership and deep technical oversight, maintaining rigorous standards for product design, modeling, and simulation throughout the product lifecycle. Partnering closely with cross-functional stakeholders, this leader drives the conversion of customer requirements into robust, innovative product designs, removes execution barriers for their team, and actively mentors engineering talent to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a technical expert for the Modine Heating business, establishing and enforcing engineering design standards, processes, and documentation practices; review and approve engineering deliverables, designs, and technical decisions.
  • Collaborate with product management, operations, quality, and sales/marketing to align technical/design deliverables with business goals.
  • Manage 3 distinct but related teams: product development engineers, drafting & standards personnel, and laboratory test technicians.
  • Oversee product development process; planning and prioritizing resources, fostering the pursuit of technical excellence, and pushing for innovative, stakeholder-pleasing solutions (i.e., easy to make, delight the customer, sustainable, profitable).
  • Maintain industry relationships to stay informed on technological developments and investigations around commercial/industrial heating strategies.
  • Develop design engineering talent, preparing for our future through hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and developing engineering staff.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and risk reduction; monitoring and reporting on key performance metrics, risks, and progress to senior leadership.

Required Education & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline required. Master's degree, MBA, Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, or leadership certifications preferred.
  • 8-10+ years of progressive design engineering experience, including at least 3-5 years in a people management or technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design engineering teams and deliver complex technical projects.
  • 5+ years in HVAC industry product design preferred
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent initiatives and balancing competing priorities.
  • Proven capability to establish and enforce engineering standards and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Experience with project planning, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Ability to evaluate technical trade-offs related to cost, schedule, performance, and risk.
  • Experience operating within regulated, manufacturing, technology, or industrial environments preferred.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $138,700 - $194,500. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
