What is a Maintenance 32BJ?

Maintenance 32BJ workers are building service employees who perform tasks such as cleaning, repairs, and general upkeep in residential, commercial, or institutional properties. The '32BJ' refers to Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32BJ, a prominent union representing building service workers, including janitors, porters, handypersons, and maintenance staff. These workers ensure that buildings are safe, clean, and operational by handling duties like minor repairs, HVAC maintenance, trash removal, and responding to tenant or management requests. Being part of the 32BJ union often means these workers receive negotiated wages, benefits, and job protections.

Maintenance 32BJ staff often encounter challenges such as managing multiple urgent repair requests, working with aging building systems, and coordinating with tenants and property management. Effective time management and clear communication are key to addressing these issues. Many employers provide ongoing training and support, and team collaboration is encouraged to share best practices and troubleshoot complex problems together.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a maintenance 32BJ, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Maintenance Worker (32BJ), you need practical skills in building maintenance, repair, and basic mechanical or electrical work, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant experience. Familiarity with hand and power tools, building management systems, and safety certifications such as OSHA are commonly required.
