Who we're looking for
Toyota is looking for team members who are passionate about technology and interested in joining a collaborative and highly motivated team as a Principal Engineer - IBM Mainframe Platform Engineer.
The primary responsibility of this role is to automate and manage the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure and services within TMNA, including configuring, installing, maintaining, upgrading, and problem-solving the IBM z/OS infrastructure.
Reporting to the Manager - Infrastructure Architecture, the person in this role will join the End User Experience & On-Prem Infrastructure team to empower users with seamless technology and robust on-prem infrastructure for enhanced productivity and collaboration.
This position is based in Plano, TX. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within a commutable distance of this location.
What you'll be doing
  • Manage the overall delivery and support process across multiple initiatives to ensure a sustainable Mainframe Operations practice for IBM z/OS infrastructure, mainframe security, performance tuning, and systems integration with strategic mainframe system architectures.
  • Leading strategic mainframe projects, including system optimization, infrastructure modernization, and proactive incident prevention.
  • Developing, communicating, and executing comprehensive technical mainframe roadmaps aligned with business goals and technology trends.
  • Driving software rationalization and hardware consolidation for best practice optimization.
  • Evaluating hardware and software stacks to recommend emerging technologies and tools for improved mainframe system availability.
  • Defining architectural principles, best practices, and governance frameworks for mainframe environments.
  • Managing mainframe security frameworks, compliance, and disaster recovery strategies for mission-critical workloads.
  • Recommending and implementing modern tools and practices (e.g., z/OSMF, Zowe) to automate and optimize mainframe operations.
  • Collaborating with product owners, architects, and engineers to define IT infrastructure requirements and ensure seamless integration.
  • Developing migration strategies to elevate current systems to modern environments, including data migration.
  • Automating tasks and processes to improve efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
  • Supporting modernization initiatives in partnership with the application and functional teams.
  • Conducting proofs of concept and presenting complex technical solutions to the senior leadership.
  • Driving continuous improvement for operational resilience, disaster recovery, and business continuity, with measurable KPIs.
  • Overseeing Mainframe Managed Services operations and ensuring adherence to SLAs.
  • Addressing complex technical and operational challenges with both strategic vision and tactical execution.
  • Monitoring and reporting on KPIs, service metrics, and operational risks to senior leadership.

What you bring
  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience with IT solutions, with exposure to mainframe infrastructure environments, including Mainframe OS, Databases, storage, and security.
  • Familiarity with IBM Mainframe hardware, CPU, Tapes, and Hitachi disk.
  • Experience with Mainframe software lifecycle management for IBM and other ISV vendors.
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery (GDPS, Sysplex) and high-availability design.
  • Understanding of mainframe modernization, API enablement, and integration patterns (e.g., IBM z/OS Connect, MQ, CICS).
  • Exposure to security frameworks such as RACF and SOX audit support.
  • Ability to contribute to the design and architecture of highly available mainframe solutions using IBM products.
  • Experience supporting enterprise-wide mainframe-to-cloud modernization initiatives.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and scripting languages (REXX, CLIST), and awareness of modernization tools (z/OSMF, Zowe, Ansible).
  • Experience assisting in the implementation of technology solutions that enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
  • Ability to support technology strategies and contribute to day-to-day operations in alignment with organizational goals.
