Job description

Model Shop Supervisor:
Engenious Design creates new medical devices and other high technology systems that make the world better. Our prototype model shop is strategic to the design process, crafting world class physical prototypes and appearance models.
The Prototype Model Shop Supervisor is a leader who oversees all aspects of in-house prototype model shop work. The Supervisor directly manages and participates in day-to-day activities of highly-skilled Prototype Specialists, Model Makers and others. The Supervisor prioritizes Model Shop requests, schedules jobs, reports on status and matches assignments to individual skill levels. The supervisor estimates scope and manages work in collaboration with the team.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Above all, ensure safety of Engenious team members who work in the shop and guests who visit it.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of safety, quality, efficiency, organization, professionalism and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee all aspects of in-house prototype model shop builds for medical devices and technology systems.
  • Manage inventory, material, tools, equipment, preventative maintenance, people and work for on-schedule, within-budget and quality execution of all prototype model shop activities.
  • Plan, propose and manage efficient project work including inputs/outputs, labor, expenses and timeline.
  • Plan and deliver regular training and coaching to the model shop team and others.
  • Coordinate with Industrial Designers, Mechanical Engineers, Test Engineers, Technicians as well as clients, suppliers and other partners.
  • Manage and report metrics and job status for the model shop, including safety, quality and financial metrics.
  • Position-specific physical requirements: this job requires standing for extended periods of time, and the ability to lift and move objects as heavy as 50 lbs. The job also requires the ability to safely and skillfully operate shop tools and power tools.

Position Details:
This is a full-time, non-temporary position. This hands-on, collaborative position works from our Kansas City based design center and is not available as a remote position. The application will require you to verify willingness to relocate to the Kansas City area (if you don’t already live in the KC metro).
While we recognize that top talent comes from all over the world, we are a small team and are not able to offer visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship.
Required skills to have for the success of this role:
  • 5+ years of experience creating, crafting, fabricating or building high quality outputs in a shop or lab environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the work of a team and maintain a safe workplace.
  • Direct experience working hands-on with a variety of tools.
  • Enthusiasm to master new processes and tools.

Nice to Haves:
  • Experience working with 3D printing (SLA, SLS, FDM), laser cutting, CNC machining, hand finishing and painting.
