What are Lumbee?

The Lumbee are a Native American tribe primarily based in Robeson County, North Carolina. They are the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River and the ninth largest in the United States. The Lumbee people have a distinct culture and history, blending Native American, European, and African ancestry. Although they are recognized by the state of North Carolina, they are seeking full federal recognition, which would grant them additional rights and benefits. The tribe plays a significant role in the region's cultural and social life.

Professionals who support and advocate for the Lumbee community often encounter challenges such as navigating complex federal and state recognition processes, addressing disparities in healthcare and education, and working to preserve cultural heritage. Additionally, there can be unique challenges related to funding and policy advocacy, which require strong communication and relationship-building skills.
