What is an LPN On Call?

An LPN On Call is a Licensed Practical Nurse who is available to provide nursing care and support outside of regular working hours, such as evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays. They may respond to urgent patient needs, administer medication, and assist with medical emergencies in various settings like hospitals, nursing homes, or home care. Their flexible availability helps ensure continuous patient care and coverage during staff shortages or unexpected situations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPN On Call, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPN On Call, you need a practical nursing diploma, current LPN licensure, and solid skills in patient care and clinical assessment. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and mobile communication tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, adaptability, and compassionate communication are vital soft skills for handling urgent situations and supporting patients after hours. These skills ensure prompt, effective response to patient needs and maintain high standards of care outside regular hours.

What are some common challenges faced by LPNs in on-call positions, and how can they be managed?

LPNs in on-call roles often face challenges such as unpredictable work hours, urgent patient needs, and balancing multiple priorities. Being prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to calls is crucial, as is maintaining strong communication with other healthcare team members. Effective time management, self-care strategies, and familiarity with patient care protocols can help on-call LPNs manage stress and deliver high-quality care even during busy or overnight shifts.
