Log Sale Equipment Operator – Log Yard Assistant

Northwest Hardwoods is the premier Hardwood Lumber producer in the industry, serving the furniture, cabinet, molding, and millwork segments worldwide. We are a growing company with manufacturing facilities throughout the United States.   

Our Marienville, PA facility has an opening for an experienced log Sale Equipment operator – log Yard Assistant.  As part of the procurement team, the successful candidate will be responsible for supplying logs to our hardwood sawmill location and the on-site merchandising yard.      

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • This position will be responsible for operating various pieces of equipment in and around the log yard. The equipment includes a CAT 318 wheeled knuckle boom loader, various front end wheeled loaders, and a Prentice knuckle boom loader
  • The primary purpose of this operator position is to facilitate the resale of multiple grades of logs at NWH
  • The ideal Candidate would be able to identify common tree species in log form that are present in the region
  • Additionally, the Candidate must be willing to learn NWH log scale parameters and grades
  • The Candidate will need to be able to work with other log yard personnel to manage the flow of logs around the site
  • Candidate will need to understand log inventories and assist in the management of log decks by completing monthly cycle inventories
  • Safely and efficiently operate a rubber tired front-end loader with forks and log clamp 
  • Load and unload log trucks safely 
  • Sort logs on pad and understand decking system
  • Properly handle, move, sort and store logs in inventory by species, must learn log species within two weeks 
  • Grease and clean loader weekly
  • Able to load shipping containers when needed  
  • Other duties as required, will include some chainsaw operation and clean-up in the Mill  

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

  • Proper use, care, and maintenance of Log Loader equipment  
  • Ability to operate a Log Loader equipment and climb in and out of the equipment for at least 8 hours daily  
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move 50 pounds or more  
  • Ability to competently and safely operate a Hyundai ML955, a Volvo L90, a John Deere 644 Loader, including a CAT 318 wheeled boom loader, various front-end wheeled loaders, and a Prentice knuckle boom loader
  • Knowledge and experience in identifying and recognizing tree species of the Eastern US  
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions  
  • Ability and desire to always wear personal protective equipment and follow established safety procedures  
  • Cognitive ability to interpret and follow established administrative procedures  
  • Experience in log scaling and grading preferred   
  • Must pass drug screen and background check prior to employment. We do not accept Medical Marijuana cards
