Job description

About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Legal department provides exceptional counsel that ensures legal compliance and enables FirstEnergy to optimize business outcomes in all legal, regulatory, and commercial contexts. The Legal department is involved in every major activity and initiative involving all entities of FirstEnergy Corp.

The position will serve as a legal advisor to various business units, including utility distribution operations, with emphasis on personal injury and property damage litigation. The successful candidate will (a) work directly with the business units, department lawyers and outside counsel on all aspects of the foregoing; (b) manage complex legal matters and projects; (c) conduct legal research, negotiate, draft and edit legal documents; and (d) serve on cross‑functional teams assisting senior attorneys in representing the organization in various matters.

The position reports to the Supervising Counsel.

The position is ON‑SITE and can be within the FE service territory in Akron, OH, Reading, PA or Holmdel, NJ.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate, manage and direct the defense of tort actions and major tort claims initiated by third parties against the Company.
  • Participate in mediations and settlement conferences and negotiate settlements.
  • Work with and provide legal advice to multiple business units across the company footprint, supporting Claims organization with pre‑litigation negotiations.
  • Analyze factual and legal documents, interview relevant parties and consultants, and attend/conduct depositions and trials.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Manage work in compliance with departmental budget.
  • Demonstrate FirstEnergy values and behaviors.
Qualifications
  • JD degree from an accredited law school required.
  • Active license in OH, PA and/or NJ required.
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant work experience required, including experience investigating and managing pre‑litigation and litigated tort matters, as well as negotiating settlements; law firm experience preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in legal research.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong team player.
  • Problem solver, seeking creative solutions.
