How much do lithography engineer jobs pay per year?
What does a Lithography Engineer do?
A Lithography Engineer is responsible for developing and optimizing photolithography processes used in semiconductor manufacturing. They work with advanced lithographic equipment, such as steppers and scanners, to transfer circuit patterns onto silicon wafers with nanometer precision. Their role involves process troubleshooting, improving yield, and collaborating with teams in process integration and metrology. Lithography Engineers also evaluate new materials and techniques to enhance resolution and productivity.
What does a typical day look like for a Lithography Engineer in a semiconductor fabrication facility?
A typical day for a Lithography Engineer involves monitoring and optimizing photolithography processes, troubleshooting equipment issues, analyzing data to ensure pattern accuracy, and working closely with process, integration, and equipment engineers. You may start by reviewing production yields and addressing any anomalies identified during wafer inspection, then participate in team meetings to discuss process improvement projects or equipment maintenance schedules. Daily tasks often include conducting experiments, implementing process changes, and documenting findings to drive continuous improvement. Collaboration and fast problem-solving skills are essential due to the highly precise and cleanroom-based environment in which lithography engineers work.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Lithography Engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Lithography Engineer, you need a solid background in semiconductor physics, photolithography processes, and materials science, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Experience with photolithography tools (such as steppers or scanners), cleanroom protocols, and process simulation software are commonly required, with certifications in semiconductor fabrication being a plus. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are key soft skills for this role, especially when collaborating across engineering teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining high wafer yield, troubleshooting equipment, and driving process improvements in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Job description
As an Advanced Processing Lithography Production Engineer, you will directly support ASML's mission to enable the world's most advanced chip manufacturing. You will contribute to the development, stabilization, and continuous improvement of lithography processes used to manufacture precision glass components.
In this role, you will work in a dynamic, collaborative manufacturing environment, partnering with production teams, development groups, and cross-functional engineering organizations to create safe, stable, and highly reliable processes that meet demanding quality and performance requirements.
Role Overview
The Lithography Production Engineer (PE) owns and drives assigned manufacturing processes, contributing to their stability, capability, and continuous improvement under the guidance of senior engineers. The PE develops and applies technical depth in lithography processes, translating design intent and production requirements into well-controlled, repeatable operations.
The PE partners closely with production, equipment engineering, safety, quality, and new product development organizations to identify process risks, reduce variation, improve yield, and resolve technical issues. This role builds a strong foundation in understanding and controlling critical process variables, applying data-driven problem solving, and implementing sustainable improvements.
This is a highly hands-on role that requires regular, direct engagement with production hardware and a strong presence in cleanroom and manufacturing environments. The PE supports process documentation, equipment qualifications, and process changes throughout the manufacturing lifecycle-from introduction and ramp-up to sustained production and continuous improvement.
This role is well suited for engineers with demonstrated manufacturing experience seeking to deepen process ownership and drive measurable improvements in a high-performance production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and drive performance of lithography processes, contributing to safety, quality, yield, and process stability.
- Support the development, execution, and maintenance of process control strategies, acceptance criteria, and monitoring methods.
- Track and analyze process performance metrics to support technical decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Lead and execute investigations and resolution of process-related issues, deviations, and escalations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce variation, improve capability, and increase first-pass yield through data-driven analysis and structured problem-solving methods.
- Identify and raise process-related safety risks, supporting mitigation through process design, controls, and documented operating practices in partnership with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS).
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including work instructions, qualification reports, test plans, and safety-related analyses, to support compliant and repeatable execution.
- Partner with engineering, operations, and development teams to support daily production, sustain stable processes, and enable new product introduction.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in semiconductor, optics, or advanced manufacturing environments.
- Hands-on experience with contact photolithography, resist coating, and wet etching in semiconductor, optics, or other contamination-controlled manufacturing environments, with strong understanding of defectivity and process sensitivities.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively across engineering, operations, and all levels of management to drive alignment and execution.
- Ability to independently analyze data, identify trends, and apply structured problem-solving methods to define root causes and support corrective actions.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills, with curiosity, attention to detail, and a systematic, data-driven approach.
- Ability to work proactively, adapt quickly, and contribute effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Ability to organize work logically, manage multiple priorities, and drive issues to closure with appropriate escalation as needed.
- Experience operating in controlled manufacturing or laboratory environments, with disciplined adherence to procedures and standards.
- High comfort level working directly with hardware and spending significant time in cleanroom and manufacturing environments.
- Mindset oriented toward identifying and reducing risk, improving process robustness, and driving continuous improvement.
- Ability to build strong working relationships and contribute positively to a collaborative, team-based engineering culture.
Education
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with common manufacturing and problem-solving tools (e.g., DMAIC, A3, 8D, FMEA, DOE).
- Working knowledge of statistical process control (SPC).
