How much do lithography engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for lithography engineer in Massachusetts is $126,538.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $90,600.00 and $165,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a lithography engineer do?

A Lithography Engineer is responsible for developing and optimizing photolithography processes used in semiconductor manufacturing. They work with advanced lithographic equipment, such as steppers and scanners, to transfer circuit patterns onto silicon wafers with nanometer precision. Their role involves process troubleshooting, improving yield, and collaborating with teams in process integration and metrology. Lithography Engineers also evaluate new materials and techniques to enhance resolution and productivity.

What does a typical day look like for a lithography engineer in a semiconductor fabrication facility?

A typical day for a Lithography Engineer involves monitoring and optimizing photolithography processes, troubleshooting equipment issues, analyzing data to ensure pattern accuracy, and working closely with process, integration, and equipment engineers. You may start by reviewing production yields and addressing any anomalies identified during wafer inspection, then participate in team meetings to discuss process improvement projects or equipment maintenance schedules. Daily tasks often include conducting experiments, implementing process changes, and documenting findings to drive continuous improvement. Collaboration and fast problem-solving skills are essential due to the highly precise and cleanroom-based environment in which lithography engineers work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lithography engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lithography Engineer, you need a solid background in semiconductor physics, photolithography processes, and materials science, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Experience with photolithography tools (such as steppers or scanners), cleanroom protocols, and process simulation software are commonly required, with certifications in semiconductor fabrication being a plus. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are key soft skills for this role, especially when collaborating across engineering teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining high wafer yield, troubleshooting equipment, and driving process improvements in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

How much do lithography engineers make?

Lithography engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in photolithography and process development can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000 annually.

Job description

Position Summary:
The Lithography Technician will play a key role in operating, developing, and maintaining novel lithography systems to enable Irradiant's 3D nanofabrication platform. This role requires expertise in microscope operation, materials processing, and analysis, along with a hands-on approach to problem-solving. The ideal candidate will collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to drive lithographic tooling to generate prototype and production volumetric prints, support experimental measurements to collect scientific insights and improve lithographic processes into scalable, manufacturable solutions.
This is a hands-on, mentorship-oriented role for an early-mid career technician eager to learn quickly, take direction, and take on more ownership over time in a fast-paced deep-tech environment.
What You'll Do:
  • Support the maintenance, operation & optimization of the entire lithography printing workflow.
  • Develop, document, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols and best practices.
  • Assist with continuous troubleshooting & maintenance of lithography systems to ensure system stability and reliability.
  • Operate multiple lithographic systems with differing functionality and technical capabilities.
  • Collaborate with optics, metrology, and software/hardware engineers to develop, verify and implement new lithography system features.
  • Support the scale-up of experimental printing into high-volume manufacturing.
  • Monitor lithography print output for consistency and quality.
What You'll Bring:
  • Hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, working with materials preparation and characterization.
  • Process-oriented, with a methodical and documentation-first approach to your work.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions and written experimental protocols.
  • Experience with sensitive materials handling.
  • Experience with data analysis and documentation of experimental results.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced research and development environment.
  • Familiarity with common materials characterization techniques (e.g. profilometry, ellipsometry, spectroscopy, optical and electron microscopy).
  • Previous experience in a high-tech manufacturing/production environment would be advantageous.
  • Proven experience or research into lithographic printing techniques would be advantageous.
  • Desirable; hands-on lithography skills, programming (Python, MATLAB), laser experience.
Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this role is $85,000 - $95,000, and we are committed to equitable compensation across the company. Total compensation includes equity in the form of stock options. We administer benefits through Thatch, providing an annual company-funded allowance that gives employees the flexibility to choose the health plans and coverage that best fit their needs. We also offer a standard four-week vacation policy and encourage folks to take regular, meaningful PTO.
About Irradiant Technologies:
Irradiant Technologies is a nano-optics and photonics foundry building unique 3D nanofabricated components, traditionally difficult or impossible to manufacture. Using two-photon polymerization additive manufacturing, we create micro-optics and passive optical interconnects that change how light is used to sense, communicate, image, display, and compute across defense and commercial markets. With our ongoing Series A fund raise, we are scaling from R&D to production and expanding our engineering team to deliver robust, integrated photonic systems.
Equal Employment Opportunity
Irradiant Technologies is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team free from discrimination and harassment, and we encourage candidates of any race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, veteran, or disability status to apply.
