What is Linux troubleshooting?

Linux troubleshooting refers to the process of identifying, diagnosing, and resolving issues that occur within a Linux operating system or its applications. This can involve addressing problems related to system performance, hardware compatibility, software errors, network configuration, or security concerns. Effective troubleshooting requires knowledge of Linux commands, log files, and system architecture. Professionals use a variety of tools and diagnostic techniques to isolate and fix issues, ensuring the system runs smoothly and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Linux Troubleshooting, and why are they important?

To excel in Linux Troubleshooting, you need strong expertise in Linux operating systems, shell scripting, and system administration, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Bash, system monitoring utilities, configuration management systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Linux+ or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) are highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for quickly diagnosing and resolving technical issues, ensuring system reliability, and supporting organizational IT infrastructure.

We're looking for a highly technical, hands on IT Technician to support Skydio's manufacturing environment in Hayward. This role is focused on deep troubleshooting, Linux support, identity systems, and network triage.
You'll be the frontline technical expert for employees, capable of diagnosing complex issues across Linux systems, identity platforms (Okta, JumpCloud), and on prem network infrastructure.
This role is critical to keeping our manufacturing environment running smoothly and requires someone who is comfortable going deep technically while still being highly responsive and collaborative.

  • Troubleshoot connectivity problems (wired & wireless)
  • Assist with:
    • Switch troubleshooting (ports, VLANs, cabling issues)
    • Wireless network issues
    • Identifying outages or degraded performance
  • Partner with the Network Engineer on escalations and implementations

Hands On IT Operations
  • Support hardware lifecycle (deployment, repair, replacement)
  • Assist with manufacturing floor IT needs and rapid response issues
  • Own problems end to end, not just ticket resolution

Documentation & Continuous Improvement
  • Document troubleshooting steps, fixes, and recurring issues
  • Contribute to internal knowledge base and process improvements
  • Identify patterns and proactively reduce repeat issues

What Makes You a Good Fit
Technical Experience
  • 4+ years in a technical IT support role (not entry-level help desk)

    • macOS and Windows support
  • Experience with Okta (SSO, MFA, lifecycle management)
  • Experience with JumpCloud or similar device management tools

Mindset & Approach
  • Strong problem solver who can go beyond surface level fixes
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, high interruption environment
  • Proactive - identifies issues before they become recurring problems
  • Tea -oriented and able to work closely with engineering and IT

Nice to Have
  • Certifications (CompTIA A+, Network+, Linux+)
  • Experience in manufacturing or lab environments
