Job Description
The Linux System Administrator will supervise and manage the daily activities of configuration and operation of Linux-based business systems supporting the NMMES program. This position requires expertise in optimizing system operations and resource utilization, performing system capacity analysis and planning, and ensuring compliance with DoD cybersecurity requirements. The Linux Administrator will provide technical assistance to users and collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain mission-critical IT infrastructure supporting Navy ship maintenance operations.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure and Operations Support
  • Install, configure, and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers in physical and virtual environments
  • Manage Linux-based enterprise systems supporting Navy shore-based maintenance IT solutions
  • Optimize system operations and resource utilization to ensure high availability and performance
  • Perform system capacity analysis, planning, and performance monitoring
  • Configure and maintain network services including NFS, DNS, NTP, DHCP, and LDAP integration
  • Implement and manage virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM) hosting Linux systems
  • Support data center operations and participate in system consolidation initiatives

Cybersecurity and Compliance
  • Implement and maintain Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) compliance for Linux systems
  • Support Risk Management Framework (RMF) compliance activities and security assessments
  • Configure and manage security controls including firewalls, SELinux, and access control policies
  • Conduct vulnerability scanning and remediation using tools such as SCAP Compliance Checker and Nessus
  • Maintain system hardening in accordance with DISA security guidelines
  • Support security audits and provide documentation for Authority to Operate (ATO) packages
  • Monitor systems for security incidents and respond to threats in coordination with cybersecurity teams

System Administration and User Support
  • Manage user accounts, groups, and permissions across enterprise Linux systems
  • Develop and maintain system automation using shell scripting (Bash), Python, and configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet)
  • Implement backup and disaster recovery procedures for critical systems
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system issues, hardware failures, and software errors
  • Provide technical assistance and support to end users accessing business systems
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and problem resolutions
  • Coordinate with application teams to support middleware and business application deployments

Leadership and Collaboration
  • May lead and direct the work of junior system administrators
  • Collaborate with network engineers, developers, and cybersecurity analysts
  • Participate in change management and configuration control processes
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives for IT infrastructure
  • Coordinate with Government personnel on system requirements and priorities

Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related discipline)

Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Linux system administration or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with enterprise Linux environments (RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux)
  • Familiarity with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Experience with system capacity analysis and performance optimization

Clearance
  • Active Secret security clearance (minimum)

Desired Qualifications
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
  • Experience in DoD or Navy IT environments
  • Knowledge of DISA STIG implementation and compliance
  • Experience with Risk Management Framework (RMF) and Authority to Operate (ATO) processes
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) or hybrid cloud environments
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Podman)
  • Experience with automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
  • Prior experience supporting ship maintenance or logistics IT systems
  • IAT Level III certification (CASP+, CISSP, CISA, or equivalent)
