While both roles require CPR and First Aid certifications and are based in aquatic environments, lifeguards focus on safety and rescue, whereas swim instructors concentrate on teaching swimming skills. The roles often overlap but serve different primary purposes within aquatic facilities.
A lifeguard monitors swimmers at the beach or in a pool, watches for hazards, and strives to maintain safety. As a lifeguard, your responsibilities include supervising swimmers and enforcing safety rules. Your job duties can also include organizing group activities, maintaining equipment, cleaning pools, and teaching swimming lessons to swimmers of all ages. You can find lifeguard jobs at public and private beaches, lakes, public swimming pools, hotel or community swimming pools, and public and private schools from grade school to university level.
The Frank J. Thornton YMCA Aquatic Center is seeking part time enthusiastic community members to help save lives and ensure the safety of patrons at our pool! Looking for certified lifeguards or swimmers who are interested in becoming lifeguards (we will certify you if you qualify)! The pay range for this position $15-$16 per hour.
DUTIES of a Lifeguard
Lifeguards will be responsible for the safety of the members and program participants.
QUALIFICATIONS of a Lifeguard
Lifeguards must be at least 15 years old and have current CPR, AED, First Aid and either American Red Cross or Ellis Lifeguard certification. Oxygen Administration (O2) is preferred but not required. The Y will train interested candidates who meet basic swim requirements if not already certified!
