LIFEGUARD & SWIM LESSON INSTRUCTOR
REPORTS TO: Aquatics Director
PAY TYPE: Hourly, Non-Supervisory
PAY RATE: Varies for job duty; Starts at $12.68 / hr.
BENEFITS: Not Eligible
SCHEDULE: Flexible; Year-Round
This position will remain posted until filled. All qualified and interested applicants are encouraged to apply.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensures the general supervision and safety of patrons of the aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies
  • Provides high-quality swim lessons (private and/or group) to swimmers of all levels and abilities based upon established standards and program requirements
  • Maintains strict safety protocols for participants both in the general pool area and during instructional classes
  • Represents the West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School by maintaining a professional attitude and delivering excellent customer service to a diverse population
  • Communicates effectively and works as a cohesive team with other lifeguards and instructs on duty, especially during emergency situations or co-taught classes
  • Handles all incidents in a manner appropriate to training, ensuring First Aid is properly escalated to the Facility Supervisor
  • Attends mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled to maintain rescue readiness and instructional skills

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Education, Training, and Experience Required:
    • All current Red Cross Certifications for lifeguarding (required)
    • Knowledge of and the ability to demonstrate rescue skills and swim lesson instruction in an aquatic environment
    • Acceptable results of an expanded criminal history background check done at the cost of the applicant (required for anyone 18 years of age and older)
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics:
    • Displays a positive, energetic, and enthusiastic attitude
    • Ability to work independently and maintain high alertness while instructing or guarding
    • Strong communication and instructional skills to engage with swimmers of all abilities

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Position works indoors in a typical aquatic facility environment
  • May work near others, often within a few feet, and interact directly with the public, students, and parents
  • Will frequently be exposed to wet conditions, high humidity, and noise levels that are distracting
