Description
Life Action offers many ways to use your God-given gifts to help believers everywhere move toward revival, vitality, and their mission with Jesus. We're looking for people who have a passion for Jesus, a heart to serve, and a desire to be a part of work that matters! We have opportunities to serve remotely and at our facilities in Buchanan, MI.
Summary of Duties: The Senior Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the financial integrity of Life Action Ministries by performing advanced accounting functions, preparing accurate financial statements, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. This role requires strong technical accounting skills paired with a heart for stewarding ministry resources faithfully and transparently. The Senior Accountant works closely with the Controller and finance team to ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and to provide reliable financial information that supports ministry decision-making.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Lead or assist in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards.
  • Analyze account balances and financial trends, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
  • Assist with the annual audit process, including preparing schedules and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Maintain fund accounting records, ensuring proper tracking of restricted, temporarily restricted, and unrestricted funds.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting efforts in partnership with the Controller and ministry leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and nonprofit financial regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining and improving internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior accounting staff as needed.
  • Support special financial projects, including donor fund tracking, as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the finance team and broader ministry.

Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit or ministry accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of fund accounting and nonprofit financial reporting standards (GAAP for nonprofits).
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Blackbaud Financial Edge, QuickBooks, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial staff.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required during peak close periods, audits, or ministry events.
Compensation
Compensation for this position is funded through Ministry Partner Development (MPD). A salary goal will be established, and Life Action Ministries will provide the training, coaching, and resources needed to help you build a team of ministry partners to reach that goal.
All approved ministry-related business expenses are covered by Life Action Ministries.
Benefits for full-time employees include health insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and paid vacation. Complete details will be provided with a formal offer of employment.
