Job description

The Life Cycle Costing Engineer is responsible for evaluating, modeling, and influencing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of mining truck platforms throughout their full life cycle-from concept and design through operation, maintenance, and end-of-life.

This role bridges engineering design, reliability, maintenance, and field operations to ensure that design and business decisions are informed by accurate life cycle cost data. By quantifying cost drivers such as component replacement intervals, maintenance downtime, and overhaul strategies, the Life Cycle Costing Engineer supports optimized product designs, improved customer value, and reduced total operating costs. This 'forward looking view' is essential for proactive asset management.

Responsibilities
  • Design, update, and implement Life Cycle Cost (LCC) models for off-highway mining trucks, including their key components and systems.
  • Evaluate and quantify total cost of ownership (TCO), covering capital investment, maintenance labor, parts usage, equipment downtime, rebuild programs, and end-of-life factors.
  • Partner with engineering design teams to evaluate design alternatives using life cycle cost as a decision-making metric.
  • Translate reliability, maintainability, and serviceability data into cost impacts and financial risk assessments.
  • Support engineering design reviews, DFMEA activities, and product development gates by providing life cycle cost performance benchmarks.
  • Analyze field data, warranty data, and service histories to identify major life cycle cost drivers and improvement opportunities.
  • Work closely with reliability engineering to incorporate failure rates, MTBF, and component life assumptions into cost models.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and service teams to validate labor times, maintenance intervals, tooling requirements, and rebuild strategies.
  • Support development of optimized preventative maintenance and component replacement strategies based on life cycle cost trade-offs.
  • Provide life cycle cost inputs to pricing, commercial, and customer-facing analyses as required.
  • Prepare clear, data-driven reports and presentations that communicate life cycle cost insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Continuously improve LCC methodologies, assumptions, and data quality through benchmarking and best practices.
  • Monitor in-service performance and update cost models to reflect real-world operating conditions.
Competencies

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from a four-year college or university, preferably with prior work experience in life cycle costing, reliability engineering, maintenance engineering, or cost analysis within a heavy equipment or mining environment.
  • Travel to customer and supplier sites domestically and internationally for 1-4 weeks in duration.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Local Mine induction and access.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Local Mine HSE certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport and driver's license.
