Job description

Under general supervision, provides reference and readers advisory services; assists customers with specialized library operations; and performs other recurring Library duties.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist patrons with information, education and recreational reading needs through reference and reader advisory services while utilizing basic search and retrieval skill. Sources of information may include print material, electronic research databases and community information sources or organizations.

  • Negotiate patron account information, to apply library circulation policies and procedures, to performstandard data entry tasks utilizing automated circulation system; and ability to collect fines and fees through acash management system.

  • Respond to multiple demands for information from the public and adjust to change with respect to thesubject matter or the information need expressed in the user's inquiry.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Shelve library materials using knowledge of the Dewey Decimal classification system and assist with collection maintenance activities.

  • On a nontypical basis, may perform other additional duties not listed in this description that are in alignment with the scope of essential job functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Basic knowledge of information-finding strategies.

  • Basic knowledge of automated circulation system functions.

  • Basic knowledge of, and familiarity with print sources, online catalogs, databases, CD-ROM sources, and remoteinformation access sources.

  • Basic knowledge of how library materials and information sources are organized.

  • Basic knowledge of Dewey Decimal System classification and alpha-numeric filing system.

  • Basic knowledge of and familiarity with the library collection; literature of various subject areas, both fiction and non-fiction; and, authors and titles, both current and standard.

  • Skill in making simple arithmetic calculations.

  • Skill in cash registering and handling of monies and balancing accounts.

  • Skill in utilizing Windows-based software.

  • Skill in adapting to changes and upgrades in computer software.

  • Skill in utilizing basic word processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Skill in analyzing information needs with careful attention to detail.

  • Skill in working with others in a team approach.

  • Skill in thinking logically, analytically, and in the abstract.

  • Skill in establishing rapport with a library user quickly and easily.

  • Skill in reading and interpreting bibliographic information in various formats.

  • Ability to easily adjust to fluctuating work levels and move within the library system as assigned.

  • Ability to exercise discretion with patron records.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to push and pull up to 300lbs.

  • Ability to move up to 75 lbs.

Qualifying Education and Experience

  • One (1) year of college.

  • One (1) year of customer service experience in a bookstore setting or library.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese.
