JOB SUMMARY
This position is within the Public Services unit of the District of Columbia Public Library system and serves as a Library Technician. The position is responsible for paraprofessional functions that support the efficient operation and best use of the libraries by customers of all ages.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Incumbent maintains the location's physical materials collections.
  • Processes incoming material and evaluates collection material against standards for addition/removal for second-level review; maintains and updates specific inventories and supporting documents; publicizes the collection in public areas; advises colleagues on proper protocols; contributes to group collections projects and maintains the activity list of duty roster; alters supervisor to collections processing, maintenance, and inventory issues and proposes solutions; and coordinates materials handling by maintaining a duty roster of daily assignments.
  • Provides exceptional customer service. Staff welcomes; greets customers and assists with directing customers to needed services and programs; shows customers how to use the library independently and in self-serve capacities; responds to questions related to library and local services; offers basic computer assistance to customers on software and technology; assists
  • Department or Branch staff through support for assigned projects, programs, outreach visits; and coordinates teen employees, library aides, volunteers, etc. on small projects in accordance with approved work plans.
  • Provides technology and operational support. Performs routine spot-checks on equipment to confirm proper functioning and handles issues accordingly; advises colleagues on proper protocols; and stays abreast of and incorporates new technology and trends.
  • Assists with administrative functions.
  • Orders and maintains office supplies and training materials; maintains appropriate signage for the public; collects and enters monthly statistics; provides logistical support for trainings, workshops, meetings, and seminars, including, but not limited to, printing, A-V set-up, preparing packets, registering participants, etc.; and coordinates entries of Department events into the online Library calendar.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent educational certification (GED)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, including the ability to create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and professional correspondence using Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Able to provide technology and operational support involving the use of computers, automated library systems, digital applications, and equipment necessary to ensure efficient branch operations and high-quality customer service.

The work is performed in an office setting.
DISTRICT REFERENCE CHECK

Appointed Salary: The selected incumbent will be appointed at the appropriate salary rate of CS-06
Budgeted Salary This position is budgeted for the minimum salary of $46,437 to the maximum salary of $51,291.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
Applicants claiming residency preference will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
If the position you are applying for is in the Career, Management Supervisory, or Educational Service at an annual salary of one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) or more, you must establish residency in the District of Columbia within one hundred eighty (180) days of the effective date of the appointment and continue to maintain residency within the District of Columbia throughout the duration of the appointment.
EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
Selectee will be eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the District of Columbia government's retirement plan. However, if selectee was previously employed in the District of Columbia government under an appointment for which he/she was eligible for Civil Service Retirement (CSR), contributions to CSR will resume upon re-employment.
