Job description

Job Overview:

The Library Assistant will assist the library with maintenance responsibilities (including but not limited to calling electricians, elevator repair, etc.) and covering desk duties (including but not limited to checking in materials, making phone calls, making copies, assisting with programming, etc.). 

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Coordinate projects on behalf of the director and monitor progress
  • Support strategic initiatives by conducting basic research or analysis
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with businesses, partners, and staff


Main Tasks/Objectives

  • Receive quotes from local companies for tasks that need to be completed around the library (HVAC, Boiler, Roof, Elevator, etc.) 
  • Complete Maintenance projects around the library (including but not limited to painting, shelf repair, book repair, changing lights, landscaping, etc.) 
  • Conduct organizational deep cleaning on a regular basis
  • Assist director and staff prep/conduct programs and events as needed


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.) and basic computer applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work effectively with the public.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also working independently.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred for obtaining supplies or meeting with vendors.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment as needed, climb ladders, and perform routine maintenance and custodial tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a library, office, nonprofit, or customer service environment.
  • Experience coordinating vendors, maintenance projects, or facilities-related tasks.
  • Basic handyman or maintenance skills, including painting, minor repairs, and assembling furniture or shelving.
  • Experience planning or assisting with community programs or events.
  • Familiarity with library circulation systems or willingness to learn.
