Job description

Librarian & Information Literacy Teacher

The Green Vale School seeks a Librarian & Information Literacy Teacher to lead the library program for students in Grades 3โ€“8 beginning September 1, 2026. This faculty position teaches scheduled library and information literacy classes while fostering a strong culture of reading, research, and inquiry across the school.

The librarian partners closely with classroom teachers to integrate literature, research skills, and digital citizenship into the curriculum. In addition to teaching, the role oversees the development and stewardship of the libraryโ€™s print and digital collections and helps maintain the library as a welcoming learning hub for the school community.

The Green Vale School is a co-educational, independent day school (PNโ€“8) located on a beautiful 40-acre campus on the North Shore of Long Island. Approximately 25 miles from New York City, Green Vale has served families in surrounding suburban communities for over 100 years.

Teaching & Student Learning
  • Teach scheduled library and information literacy classes for students in Grades 3โ€“8 (approximately 20 classes per week).
  • Develop and deliver engaging lessons focused on:
  • Write narrative progress reports for students.
  • Participate in the grade-level advisory program.
  • Partner with classroom teachers to integrate research skills, literature, and information literacy into interdisciplinary projects and classroom learning.
Library Program Leadership
  • Foster a vibrant culture of reading by promoting literature, recommending books, and supporting independent reading.
  • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive library environment that supports curiosity, research, and inquiry.
  • Assist students in locating materials, conducting research, and using library resources effectively.
  • Support school-wide literacy initiatives and events such as the annual book fair.
Collection Development & Resource Management
  • Select, acquire, and maintain a diverse and engaging collection of books, media, and digital resources for students in Grades 3โ€“8.
  • Catalog and process materials using standard library practices (e.g., MARC records and the Dewey Decimal System).
  • Utilize the Follett library management system for circulation, cataloging, and reporting.
  • Maintain the organization and accessibility of the physical collection through regular shelf maintenance and collection review.
Library Operations
  • Oversee daily library circulation, including checking materials in and out and managing holds.
  • Maintain the organization of the library collection through shelving and shelf-reading.
  • Compile basic library usage statistics and reports as needed.Support student use of library technology and digital research tools.
  • Troubleshoot basic library equipment and systems (e.g., printers, circulation computers, self-checkout stations) in coordination with the schoolโ€™s technology team.
  • Maintain familiarity with emerging educational technologies that support research and literacy instruction.
Faculty Responsibilities
  • Participate in department, divisional, and grade-level meetings.
  • Contribute to school life through collaboration, school events, and community programs.

Education and Experience:

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution or state certification/licensure as a School Library Media Specialist/Teacher.
  • 1โ€“3 years of experience working in a school or academic library setting preferred.
  • Experience teaching or supporting instruction for intermediate or middle school students is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of childrenโ€™s and middle-grade literature (Grades 3โ€“8).
  • Experience planning and delivering engaging instruction.
  • Proficiency with library automation systems and digital research tools.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and families in a dynamic school environment.

Compensation:

  • The salary will be commensurate with experience; the range is $64,000 -$68,000.
