Library Aide Positions

Bellarmine College Preparatory, a Jesuit secondary school, has been educating young "men for and with others" in the Jesuit tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, since 1851.

Bellarmine College Preparatory, located in San José, California, invites applications for two part-time Library Aide positions. Under the general direction of the Director, Library Services, the Library Aide is responsible for maintaining a welcoming and collaborative environment in the Mathewson Library. This role is central to the library's physical operations and student-facing service, working in close coordination with the Director on collection, facilities, and access needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Student Service & Supervision

  • Actively circulate through the library, supervising students in study areas and maintaining a focused, welcoming environment per school policies.
  • Staff the circulation desk; assist students and faculty with checkouts, returns, and account questions.
  • Assist students in locating print and digital resources; help resolve printing and copying issues.
  • Assist faculty with use of equipment in Andrade Theater and library spaces.

Collection & Materials Management

  • Reshelve returned materials accurately and in a timely manner; process and catalog new books for display and checkout.
  • Repair or replace damaged materials; weed outdated items as directed.
  • Check in periodicals; complete bi-annual inventory of print and video collection using Follett Destiny.
  • Run overdue materials reports and contact students regarding outstanding items.

Facilities & Operations

  • Monitor printers and copiers daily; maintain office and library supplies and reorder as needed.
  • Assist the Director with room reservations and calendar coordination for Andrade Theater and library classrooms.
  • Check the library lift weekly; notify appropriate staff of facilities issues or equipment failures.
  • Track lost and found items; contact students and deliver unclaimed items to the Attendance Office.

Sustainability & General

  • Water and care for library plants weekly; manage the battery recycling program across campus.
  • Assist the Green Initiatives Coordinator with school garden and sustainability projects as needed.
  • Assist the Director with ongoing projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a library, school, or comparable service environment; library or school setting strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with library management software; experience with Follett Destiny preferred.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and basic office software for email, calendar, and document tasks.

Skills & Attributes

  • Welcoming and patient with high school students; able to maintain a positive presence in supervision contexts.
  • Self-directed, organized, and able to manage routine tasks independently with sound judgment.
  • Clear and professional communicator; able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Proficient with Outlook Calendar – library rooms/calendar management.
  • Commitment to the mission of Bellarmine and the culture of the Mathewson Library.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, using proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and/or move around the applicable working environment as needed.
  • Ability to travel around our campus safely and comfortably.
  • Ability to use a keyboard (or an alternative input device) and other office equipment.
  • Ability to read information in printed material, on a computer screen, (often for extended periods of time) and/or on a mobile device/laptop.
General Information
  • 2 shift openings: 7:30am – 12:30pm and 12:00pm – 5:30pm; hours subject to change.
  • This position is classified as a Supplement, Part-Time; Non-exempt.
  • Compensation: $30 - $35/hour.
  • This position has no direct reports.
  • This is not a telecommuting position.
