Job description

Materials Handling Specialist

Are you passionate about organization, teamwork, and helping people find what they need? Join our library team as a Materials Handling Specialist! In this role, you'll manage the day-to-day flow of materials, operate our automated materials handling machine (AMH), and ensure our shelves are always neat and ready for customers. You'll also take on key responsibilities like conducting courier runs, emptying book returns, and leading our back-of-house team by mentoring Library Page staff and volunteers. This role requires strong customer service, attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced setting. Candidates must pass a skills and shelving test, be available on some Saturdays and weekday evenings, and be able to lift items up to 40 pounds and move carts. This full-time position is perfect for someone who enjoys working in a supportive, community-focused environment.

Hiring Salary Range - $18.62 to $20.30 an hour

The Materials Handling Specialist manages the day-to-day circulation of library materials, requiring use of automated equipment and other technology. In addition to managing materials distribution in the Library, work also includes courier duties which includes operating a motor vehicle to collect and distribute library materials at locker and book drop locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Customer Service Team to enhance the customer experience across the library system; fosters "customer-first" culture by encouraging creativity and innovation in service delivery.
  • Processes transfers, holds, and material discharge; shelves various library materials, including books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and videogames; maintains neat, tidy, and orderly library materials.
  • Collects materials from remote book drops, loads library lockers, and conducts weekday and weekend courier routes as needed; strategically plans route, maneuvers dolly loaded with tubs, and navigates various weather conditions, including light snow.
  • Utilizes an automated materials handling machine (AMH) while ensuring proper operation of equipment; performs regular maintenance, troubleshoots issues, cleans the equipment, and ensures the software is up to date.
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and support for other staff and volunteers while ensuring daily library material circulation; works shifts assigned as the building opener or closer; assists Customer Service Supervisors in developing procedures, training, and coordinating the work of Library Pages and Volunteers.

Qualifications:

Experience: One year of previous work experience in library, retail, public service, or related experience is required with preference given to candidates who have previous supervisory or management experience. Demonstrated computer and technology proficiency is required.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Preference is given to candidates with one or more years of college education, technical training, or equivalent education.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required.

Language: Proficiency with verbal and written English language required. Additional proficiency with Spanish and American Sign Language preferred.

Environmental or Physical Demands: This job requires physical activities like bending, reaching, walking, and standing. Lifting items up to 40 pounds is also required along with the ability to push and maneuver filled book carts. Exposure to a variety of weather conditions like rain, snow, cold and heat will occur and requires the ability to drive in light snow.
