Description
The Library Technician supports a large-scale inventory project at a major library in Richmond, VA. This role involves working on-site to ensure the accuracy and completeness of catalog records through physical item verification and metadata review. The position requires familiarity with an Integrated Library System (ILS) and strong attention to detail in performing routine, repetitive tasks.
Responsibilities:
  • Retrieve library materials (books and serials)
  • Scan barcodes into an Integrated Library System or search by bibliographic elements (title, author, call number)
  • Verify key bibliographic elements, location information, and ensure each item is properly linked to the correct record with a barcode
  • Apply duplicate barcodes and label protectors
  • Flag materials that require full cataloging and preservation review
  • Stabilize and rehouse items that require additional support
  • Maintain detailed records of work

Requirements
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience working in a library setting using an Integrated Library System (ILS) to search and retrieve records, preferably in an academic, government, or research environment
  • Experience with Ex Libris Alma strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with the Library of Congress Classification system preferred
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to focus on small variations in bibliographic records

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching
  • Must be able to lift up to 44 pounds
  • Must be able to push book trucks weighing up to 400 pounds
