Job description

Teacher Aide, Library Assistant

Position: Teacher Aide, Library Assistant

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt

Number of Days: According to district calendar

Department: Teaching and Learning

Reports To: Principal and Teacher/Librarian Assigned

Supervises: None

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university
  • Educational Aide Certificate from state

Experience:

  • Some experience working with children

Position Function/Purpose: Assist the librarian and assist the teacher in the preparation and management of activities and administrative requirements.

Essential Functions:

  1. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
  2. Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  3. Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  4. Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  5. Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom.
  6. Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
  7. Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom and library.
  8. Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  9. Assist the teacher and librarian in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
  10. Participate in in-service training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
  11. All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  12. Processing books and instructional media.
  13. Inventory classroom needs on a regular basis.
  14. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  15. Other duties as assigned by cluster librarian and or building principals.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)
  • Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall:
    • Hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher.
    • Have satisfied one of the following requirements:
      • Has three creditable years of experience, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service), as either an educational aide I or II.
      • Has completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas.
    • Ability to work well with children.
    • Knowledge of general office equipment.
