Description/Job Summary
Baltimore City Community College is searching for a Director of the Library and Learning Commons (LLC). The Director of the LLC provides leadership in supporting teaching and learning for a diverse community of users, including students, faculty, staff, and community stakeholders. As a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership team, the Director collaborates extensively across the institution to advance teaching and learning and will report to the Assistant Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction or designee. This role ensures that all LLC users have access to a wide range of resources and services, such as physical and digital media collections, instructional technologies, and information literacy and instruction. These resources and services are delivered in physical, remote, and virtual environments.
The Director of the LLC leads outreach and engagement by defining and communicating the role of the Library within the broader academic community. This role makes a concerted effort to inspire and encourage departmental participation and works with faculty to adopt and support the use of open educational resources (OERs). The Director establishes and maintains effective liaison relations with both internal and external stakeholders. The Director advocates resources necessary to achieve the library's goals, enhance existing resources, and supporting the function and growth of the LLC.
Responsibilities/Duties
  • Provide leadership for the Learning Commons development and implementation, including engaging and collaborating with appropriate academic departments, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide leadership for the assessment of the Learning Commons, including the data collection, monitoring and evaluating progress, and recommending and implementing institutional practices to improve effectiveness on an on-going basis.
  • Generate reports to meet institutional needs and grant requirements; prepare and manage annual budget for the Learning Commons; maintain accurate records regarding expenditure and equipment inventories; review operations on a periodic basis to optimize cost effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership to staff, faculty, and students to promote the services provided by the Learning Commons.
  • Interact with students in the LLC to promote and enhance a growth mindset regarding student learning and model such behavior consistently for faculty and staff.
  • Provide administrative support for users of the services, equipment, materials, and software available through the Learning Commons.
  • Provide Open Educational Resources (OER) and copyright support for all levels of the institution.
  • Ensure that reference services are available and circulation activities and other library functions are effectively performed during the hours of library operation.
  • Responsible for ensuring the optimal functioning of the integrated automation system; ensures appropriate preservation of essential data and records.
  • Supervise the timely and accurate processing, cataloging and circulation of library resources.
  • Prepare and recommend budget based on current needs and ensure operations are conducted within budget parameters.
  • Select resources for purchase and addition to the library collection, working within the collection development guidelines approved by the instructional deans; advise college staff of resources available.
  • Plan and prepare for future growth and innovation; prepare and submit proposals for enhancement of services based on objective need analysis and use projections.
  • Supervise library staff, coordinate activities, and arrange for appropriate training and technical support; provide communication to staff regarding actions and decisions of administration.
  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to applicable federal, state and college laws, requirements, policies, and procedures within their area of authority.
  • Work with college staff to determine learning resource needs; participate or make assignments to appropriate college committees.
  • Responsible for compilation, preservation, cataloging, and appropriate accessibility of college archives.
  • Ensure that required reports for federal and state agencies and for internal needs are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in library operations, request appropriate personal professional development.
  • Maintain communications and membership as appropriate with professional associations.

Required Qualifications
Education:
  • Master's degree in library and information science, or a closely related field, from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.
Experience:
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in a post-secondary academic library, which must include
    1. Experience with an automated library operations system
    2. Experience using technologies to provide and enhance library services and its changing roles in higher education
    3. Experience recruiting, retaining, developing, and evaluating diverse staff, and in leading and bringing together people of diverse backgrounds in an inclusive manner
    4. Experience in post-secondary instruction

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of and experience with assessment of library services
  • Ability to effectively supervise and direct both skilled professionals and semi-skilled assistants
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with college students, clients, faculty, staff, and administration
  • Oral and written communication and listening skills suitable to engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders
