The Pima County Public Library is looking for a leader to provide professional library desk, technology assistance, and circulation services to patrons. This position manages technical support staff and keeps circulation and tech needs in order at the branch.
Essential Functions:
As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the department's need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.
  • Supervises, mentors, assesses, and evaluates staff's work performance, and makes recommendations such as the implementation of performance management plans, disciplinary action, and termination of employment;
  • Interviews, hires, and trains new circulation staff to provide expert and professional library services to patrons, and supervises and directs the activities of the managing librarians and technical support staff;
  • Oversees the activities of the circulation department and ensures the circulation desk is properly managed, the library's physical collections and online databases are accurately curated and maintained, and financial transactions are conducted and recorded according to library policy;
  • Supervises the day-to-day responsibilities of the library technical assistants, delegates time-sensitive assignments to staff, monitors the availability of resources, and approves completed projects;
  • Develops, coordinates, and promotes multilingual, culturally-relevant programs in all branches of the library in the County, and advocates continually for the Latino and Hispanic communities' equitable access to library services and resources;
  • Provides customer service and assistance in person, telephonically, and by email to a diverse community of English- and Spanish-speaking patrons including, but not limited to checking books and reading material in and out of the library, following up on overdue books, collecting fines and fees, registering and enrolling new library members, conducting research in response to patrons' queries, and promoting the library's programs and services;
  • Attends branch, department, management, and system-wide meetings as a division, unit, and service-level expert representative, and coordinates and provides input to library services, operations, and programs in support of the Pima County Public Library's strategic vision, goals, and objectives;
  • Attends, develops, and presents training courses to staff in branches across the County on a range of topics including, but not limited to lending library circulation systems, technology, programs, and resources;
  • Assists with the development, implementation, evaluation, and interpretation of department policies, projects, and procedures, and ensures that library staff understand and comply with them at all times;
  • Evaluates automated information system applications, products, and programs for library use, maintains and participates in database input and retrieval, and assists information services staff in resolving production difficulties.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree from an accredited college, technical, business or vocational school in library technology or library science AND one year of library circulation desk service experience.
OR:
Two years of experience providing high-volume customer service or library circulation desk services.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Minimum three (3) years technology experience (email, eBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, personal electronic devices such as tablets, cell phones, e-readers, library website, Google forms or docs).
  • Experience in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Experience working on a team and collaborating with others on projects or tasks.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Minimum three (3) years library customer service experience.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
Supplemental Information:
Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record.
Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. Some positions may require bilingual abilities, in English and a second-language, as determined by the department head.
Physical/Sensory Requirements: Constantly required to exchange accurate information. Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery. Constantly observes details at close range. Frequently remains in a stationary position. Occasionally moves about inside an office. Occasionally moves office equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Motion Activity - grasping; Speaking Activity - in person and on the phone.
Working Conditions: Constantly works in an indoor environment. Incumbent may be required to work rotating shifts, including weekends.
