What is a library bookstore?

A library bookstore is a retail space, often located within or affiliated with a library, that sells new or used books, magazines, and sometimes other media or library-related merchandise. These bookstores are often operated by library staff or volunteers and may be run by a Friends of the Library group. Proceeds from sales typically support library programs, services, or special events. Library bookstores can also serve as a community hub, offering affordable literature and promoting literacy. They may accept donations of gently used books from the public.

How does working in a library bookstore differ from a traditional retail bookstore environment?

Working in a library bookstore often involves close collaboration with library staff and community members, and the environment tends to be more service-oriented than sales-driven. You may help patrons find both library materials and items for purchase, support library fundraising efforts, and organize special events or book sales. The role typically involves a mix of customer service, merchandising, and administrative tasks. Additionally, you'll likely develop a strong understanding of library resources and contribute to promoting literacy and community engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Library Bookstore Clerk, and why are they important?

Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems, library catalog software, and basic accounting tools is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills help you interact effectively with patrons and coworkers. These skills ensure efficient store operations, accurate transactions, and a positive experience for library visitors.

Job description

Status:Part-Time|Closing Date: July 2nd, 2026

Driver-Outreach Assistant

The Driver-Outreach Assistant manages and operates the Uintah County Library's mobile fleet, providing critical library services to remote communities across the rural highways and mountain roads of Uintah and Daggett counties. Reporting to the Assistant Director, this role oversees the vehicle's daily safety inspections, maintenance logs, and fleet coordination while running the Little Library Express summer schedule and preparing for expansion into a full-scale bookmobile. On the road, the Assistant acts as a front-line point of contact: executing standard circulation tasks via the Integrated Library System (ILS), registering new cardholders, processing fines, and offering technical troubleshooting for on-vehicle Wi-Fi and digital resources. Additionally, the role collaborates closely with the Programming and Outreach Librarian to systematically rotate and merchandise the collection, foster a welcoming environment at all community stops through spontaneous children's programming, track daily operational statistics, and strictly maintain patron confidentiality in compliance with Utah Code.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, combined with at least one year of experience in a public library, school library, bookstore, or comparable public-facing customer service role; an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. Highly desirable qualifications include an Associate's degree or college coursework, bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, localized knowledge of the Uintah Basin communities, and prior experience in mobile outreach operations or youth literacy activities like children's story-times. Because this role requires driving county vehicles and involves regular interaction with minors, candidates must hold a valid Utah Driver's License with an insurable driving history-verified by a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)-and successfully clear a pre-employment criminal background check.

This part-time position offers an hourly wage of along with some fantastic perks! You'll have access to our county wellness center, which includes gym equipment, and you can participate in engaging employee events and valuable workshops. While traditional benefits aren't provided, you'll be joining an amazing team dedicated to the literacy of our community.
